XP is not an excellent OS. It was for it's time, which was like 1999 .

Agreed, Win7 is my fav OS by far.

I wonder what OS/programming language all the NASA space vessel computers run (as in Curiosity etc)? Assuming some form of unix...

The rover runs a real-time OS called VxWorks:

The dust!
I watched the (daily?) press conference and they said that there are higher res images to follow in the next few days/weeks, when they can allocate the bandwidth to send them back. This is impressive, but the high res would be a jaw dropper!

Basic comparison of the computers on the various Mars rovers here:

Curiosity's RAD750 is based on the PowerPC 750 that was used in...

That is spectacular.. love the 'sand hills' in the distance! Or maybe they are the rocky edge of the crater?

It is the rocky edge of a crater. Looks spectacular.

Apparently they have some 720p footage of the rover descent. Cant wait for that footage.

Well something like that miight not be too far fetched. There are multiple Lagrange points around we could possibly park satellites in. Once enough have been seeded I guess we could see an increase in bandwidth (if not in speed) when they talk to one another.
