Haha yeah, they must have been strong blokes back then. I stripped all the rangefinder gear and rear hood off mine, and use a convertible Symmar 150/265 lens, it's not so bad to lug around now.

C-41 to B&W Printing. Portra 400 to Ilford Multigrade in Rodinal 1+20, key here is short exposure times, not long.

Second go... left to right.. fresh Rodinal 1+20, 2 secs, f/16 unfiltered (6x7cm to ~4x6"). Which appears slightly deeper blacks than standard print developers.

The rest are in Rodinal 1+20 + 4g/L sodium sulphite, 4g/L sodium hydroxide, and 1g/L hydroquinone. Though all this did was greatly speed up developing time (as in about 20 seconds in sub 20 celsius temp), it still hits the point where increased developing time does nothing.

Therefore similar should be had in regular print developers. This scene is also overcast.

So 2, 3, and 4 are grade 5, 4 sec, 8 sec and 16 seconds respectively, between pic 3 and 4 I think lies the best result, though I'd like #3's light skin tones (looks nice in person) with close to #4's blacks on the rest, possibly adding potassium iodide might retard highlight development.

And if that's too much contrast, that's grade #5, can always take your grade down.

Is there anywhere near Brisbane that sells C41 developer kits?

I think photo continental doesn't carry any, so my next step was to order from Vanbar with land courier to Brissy but that adds $20 to the cost.

Yeah I order my c41 stuff from Vandybar. How much tetenal were you looking at getting? 1L or 5L?

What B&W dev have you been using? Maybe D-76, Xtol or Tmax for Kodak and LC-29 for Ilford as far as available locally goes. Otherwise the star track shipping from vanbar scales pretty well for multiple items.

Thanks zach. I got a 1L tetenal kit from Vanbar in the end as I only have 15 odd rolls of 35mm.

I also realised that the shipping was the same if I added on more stuff, so I picked up a bottle of Rodinal to go with it, one of the classic devs that I haven't got to try before. My preference is actually Kodak HC110 but can't seem to find any of that in Australia. I've been using Ilfosol 3 lately but results are average.

What do you use? Maybe next one I'll try is D76.

I've got a bottle of that rolling around in the boot of my car; if you're ever near Paddington, come round, I'll decant you some.

D76 is my standard developer. I'm pretty happy with it.

Thanks for the offer Maybe next time when I'm short of dev again... I love how it is so concentrated and last for ages. The negs come out nice and contrasty too.

I can't stand the shit - not a fan of humped curves. About all I like is that it's easy to one-shot mix.

xtol replenished for me.

As far as I know Kodak Aus does not import HC-110. Borges lists the replenisher so maybe call them and ask if they carry the regular stuff.

Otherwise you can get it via B&H. I got one and a bit bottles of it left.

Theres an Ilford one you can get here that supposedly is the same but at half the dilution rate I think.

I'd use gloves with HC-110, it has the most stern health warnings for any developer I've seen.

Some of the warnings on the bottle include: CNS effects, kidney damage, may cause blood disorders etc

I've decided I'm not interested in developing colour or paying for it to be developed. If anyone is interested I have 7 x Portra 400 and 5 x Portra 160, all stored in the freezer since it arrived all in date by at least a year. I'd like to swap for some 135 BW film. Preferably Tri-x.

I'm also looking at purchasing a scanner soon. My first pick is the V700, however I don't want to be paying for functionality I don't use. I'll only be scanning 35mm negs, 35mm slides, the odd photo and A4 page. From what I can tell of the specs on Epson's site the V500 will suffice. Any other suggestions?

Man I would just get a dedicated like a Plustek and use whatever (cheap multifunction) to scan docs and prints. If you're only scanning 35mm the v500 isn't worth it (it is fairly woeful at it).

Yeah I would go with the plustek too. I have one and it's great, only a bit slow as its manual feed. IIRC Digital camera warehouse in Bris were selling it for $330, not sure about the latest model.

I have tons of Tri-X if you're keen , but it's in a bulk roll so I'd have to get some empty cassettes first if you want it as I don't have spare reloadable cassettes to give away.
