EFS is file encryption. Have you encrypted files on your PC (indicated by green text for the file name)?

What exactly is the error you get?

That is the error; just the 'this program has stopped working' window. Just one line of text.

No files have been encrypted

Thanks

Couldn't hurt to open command prompt and run "sfc /scannow" to make sure you don't have any corrupt system files.

Also have a check of Event Viewer and look for errors/warnings that relate to EFS. You may find more useful info that the crash dialog isn't giving.

scan showed nothing

error message in event viewer is: -

Wininit

Custom dynamic link libraries are being loaded for every application. The system administrator should review the list of libraries to ensure they are related to trusted applications.

Nothing else in there, so I assume this is it?

Thanks again
