Default so the other day... i met a newfoundland

and up until i was right next to him, i swore it was eather a bear or a person in a costume.... kinda freaked me out, even more when I was told it was only 13 months old

so other than the slobber and dislocated shoulders if it takes off while you have a leash, what else does one need to consider if you are looking to one day have one of these gentle giants?

Lovely, lovely dogs if you can handle all the slobber!

Another thing to consider is that being a giant breed they typically have quite a short life expectancy. Not sure exactly what it is for newfies but for other giants the average is typically about six.

Having a read here:

http://www.dolforums.com.au/topic/10...5#entry5878487

And talking to some other Newfie owners might help.

The missus and I were looking at getting a Newfie to a couple of years (she still wants one). We go to see them at the royal show each year.
Contrary to popular belief you don't need alot of land for them. They're relatively lazy dogs if they're allowed to be.

I personally would go for a Bern (Bernese Mountain Dog). They're a similar dog, but don't drool by the bucket load.

Both are wonderful breeds of dog though.

You'd need to consider how you'd lift it if he got hurt and you had to take him to the vet, and if you need to kennel him to go on holiday whether the kennels can accommodate him comfortably. My dogs can move about freely in a standard-sized dog run, but you'd need something bigger for a really big dog, so you might have more difficulty reserving accommodation or getting anything at short notice. It would be harder getting people to mind him for you and to rehome him if you got hit by a truck. Everything would cost you a fortune, bed, medications, food. It's a commitment getting a dog, but a really big dog even more so.

Friends of ours have a Berner (had two but cancer got one) and there is still plenty of slobber, too much for me, and we have two SBT's who love to give us a lick at any opportunity but they don't leave 'deposits'.

Edit: Combine it with the long hair and you get this foul composite material plastered to all available surfaces.

Oooh, a shiba inu - i am jelly.

Once while walking a friends shiba inu, a woman who was walking towards me with what looked like the weight of the world on her shoulders, took one look at the dogs smiling foxy face and you could see all the angst just drain out of her.

Such a beautiful dog, I wish I could afford one :/

(maybe i should stop buying pc bits xD)

Try reading the article text instead of just looking at pretty pictures.

We have been thinking for a while about getting a shiba but the only thing thats stopping us is that we live in an apartment .

They drool still, but not in the same universe as a Newfie does

Both are great dogs though.

Don't mind me.. got that nasty flu (head cold) going around, and reading tired at 2am isn't my specialty.
