Hi,
I'm in the process of building a new comp. I'm still a bit unsure if i should get an ssd or not. Just a quick question, alot of people are saying to set the ssd to 'achi' in bios. What does it do? How would I set it on an asus motherboard? And do i have to also set 'achi' to my normal hdd for storing docs, movies, games etc. Thanks

It's best to turn it on before you install, so the correct drivers are set up from the start. It'll be somewhere in the BIOS setup.

A quick look through the manual will show that the sata 6.0g connectors on the motherboard are already set to AHCI by default. So when you plug your sata3 ssd into this connector your ready to go.
Read the manual and this should help you with where the setings are.

Go SSD for you OS and program drive and a HDD for storage. You won't regret it. Minimum SSD drive size to get is 120GB as sits in the sweet spot for price/performance.

I am upgrading from a Patriot 60GB to a OCZ Vertex 4 256GB for $265 from MSY very soon. I have had no problems with SSD's so far.

thanks for the info.
yeah i might go for a samsung 830 120gb ssd. I have read good reviews and its priced reasonably. and i did look on the manual and both sata 6 and 3 ports are set to achi on default.

Last time I checked you couldn't utilise TRIM without AHCI either

Really? I wasn't aware that was an option. Might explain why my macbook didn't die when it was stuck in IDE mode.

If you are on Win7 for example and want to go AHCI on a PC that you had windows installed on it when AHCI was off you need to install the driver before ajusting the bios or BSOD

When setting up an SSD with a fresh windows install, you will want to move your mydocs to a mechanical drive.
I use this http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials...tallation.html It makes the entire process pain free.

The issue why I can see some may not, is related to price.
