Default 16Gb kit on an x58 board?

I've been meaning to upgrade my RAM for ages and just waiting for a 12Gb kit to come up in the For Sale thread for a while, but alas. So I was thinking of just picking up a 16Gb kit and only using three sticks.

Any thoughts?

I currently have a 6Gb set of G.Skill Pi's 1600

I have the exact same ram and have been meaning to upgrade as well.

I then start looking at 16GB kits, which leads me to wanting to get Sandy/Ivy Bridge to make "better" use of the kit....

Anyways, should work fine. That whole matched thing seems to be just marketing fluff. Though I suppose if you're paranoid, could go for a quad kit. Of course, you could run all 16GB in either dual channel and tri + single channel configurations.

Not sure if I'm actually helping at all.....

Or if you're not opposed to running 6 DIMMs (if you're overclocking, you need to weigh up the strain on the IMC), you could get a 4x4GB and an equal 2x4GB kit and go for 24GB.

It sounds like you want to do it on the cheap, but you also need to consider the value you're getting if you're paying for 33% more than you're using.

Either way, best of luck finding something suitable. If you stick a Want To By message in your sig, you might get some bites...

Yeah, I guess they're all options. Hadn't really considered buying a 4x4 and 2x4, but it's a good idea. It's just that I see so many 16Gb kits floating around here fore $80 and remember that I paid $300 for my 6Gb kit...

I'd highly recommend against filling all 6 ram slots. If you google around, you'll find that X58 has a real issue with running 6. In fact, i've had a nightmare trying to get my system to run smoothly with 12gb, having issues with not only the system booting showing 4gb installed as opposed to 12gb, but big stability issues too. Seem to have fixed it now, solution was to rebuild everything, and then throw a shittonne of voltage at everything. Seems to be working for the moment at least.

i am running two 3x2gb kits in my computer, they are corsair xms3's as well. and my cpu is clocked to 3.8ghz daily. haven't had any issues what so ever. but having said that i struggle to get it to run over 4.25ghz without large voltages and being stable!

You can run all 4 sticks, I have 2 sets of 2 by 2 gb 2250 c9 hypers, I populate the first 2 ram slots, gap, stick, gap , stick, it runs in triple channel and doesn't have the mem controller issues that 6 sticks does

*shrugs*

I had no end to troubles running 6x2gb sticks. Things like only half the ram showing up as unusable, mass instability etc etc.... lots of tweaking in the bios to get everything running correctly (voltages/timings, mainly the vdimm and qpi/vdimm ratios).... and even then I still feel it wasn't as stable as it should be. Plus x58 was never designed to run all 6 slots at 1600mhz+ speeds.

Now i've swapped to 3x4gb sticks and it runs perfectly.

ymmv

im running 6x2GB corsair XMS3@ 1600mhz Cl8 and its fine. no issues

only reason i want to upgrade to 3x4GB is for less sticks and dont stress the IMC as much.
