For the most part, anything that works under Windows 7 will work on Windows 8.

Pity slmgr.vbs /rearm doesn't work this time around. That being said though, it doesn't switch off your PC or really annoy you apart from lack of customisation and the watermark. Eh, keys available in 3 days anyway.

I couldn't get my amd 7970 vid card & asus xonar d2x sound card to install, so it's effectively useless. Unless you have something very vanilla, the lack of any drivers besides the ones from MS are a bit offputting.. Set it up as a trial and go from there.. Also, you can't customise any of your settings ie, desktop, lock screen etc as windows needs to be activated before that can happen..
Not sure why you had such bad luck.

Everything I've installed it on has worked with no problem.

Ok I am starting to feel Windows 8 might not be that bad. Yes some will hate it (actually quite a lot) but it reminds me of Office 2007 and as W8 has the Key word Metro Office 2007 had the key word Ribbon when it came out.

People have got use to Office 2007/2010 and I believe this will happen with Windows 8.

2 big things that I think will help make Windows 8 great:
  1. New Hardware that is to come out
  2. The cloud

I believe that there is some very good hardware to come out for Windows 8 as MS have been doing a lot of collaboration with hardware partners and some may remember the leaked slides that they had form a meeting with key hardware partners regarding what Apple have done.

just like to pipe in on file extensions
i have them on and any computer i would on have them on

and there is for me a simple reason i do it for people.
office
when it changed to 2007 there was an x added and if you search for .doc in windows 7 it will bring up all the documents including .docx but won't show the extension.
now the icon is a bit different but i found peopel preffered to see the doc/x bit as alot were saving multiple copies in both native and old format.

so in the end it was a bit of a time saver.
plus saying just click on the exe file made more sense when the could see the .exe instead of an icon or image.

so for me i don't see it as a super user type deal at all.

as for windows 8 i,m still grabbign the latest and then i,ll test it.... but so far the focus group is mostly of the ewww i ahte it and where the hell is.... group

a little fiddling i think will fix that.
I also throw other things at them at the same time side by side like ubuntu/linux mint and opensuse all side by side and make them do the same tasks on all machines...it's alot of fun

2 things should die in MS land.

file extensions and the registry.

100% agree with elvis on these points.

Windows media player is there. Just type windows media player in metro.

Unless you downloaded the 'N' edition which doesn't include WMP.

Oh and no, there's no way.

Hmmm I tried third party software ViStart. It does get the start menu going in Windows 8 TRM, but manages to crash after certain time . Probably a new version of ViStart that is compatible with the RTM release is needed.

Honestly, once you get everything installed that you need and your most common programs pinned to your taskbar you'll find that you rarely see the Start screen as there's no real need to go into it. If you ever do need to go find an App that you'd normally find in the Start menu, use Win Key + Q. If you just want to get to Control Panel and other system tools, just right click in the bottom left of the screen to bring up a shortcut menu with access to all those sorta functions.

I just had a HDD failure on my laptop. I've purcahsed a new SSD to replace the failed HDD.

I was about to just throw win7 on it. However I've been bombarded with Windows8 emails from my technet subscription.

is it advisable to install windows8 or windows 8 server ?

I should be able to upgrade to the RTM via technet when it's released.
