I studied first year physics at uni so I know what I'm talking about - you can bring a 3.3 tonne laboratory from 21,240km/h to a complete stop by firing a 3.3 tonne laboratory at it at 21,240km/h in the opposite direction.

Wouldn't they then impart their energy into each other and bounce apart?

I feel lucky to be alive to see images like these come from another planet. It's just mind blowing.

Imagine what else is out there.

Full size panorama from MSL. Not sure why they're missing some bits, or why they didn't cut it out properly (excess whitespace) - but I love the clarity!

I'm pretty sure that's a photo that was constructed by stitching together all thumbnail images together

You will have to wait for the real photos a little bit longer

No, because the kinetic energy of the lab is reduced to 0 by impacting with an opposite energy by the other one. There WOULD be some elasticity in the collision, you wouldnt get a fused mass with 0 kinetic energy, but the majority of it would be expended. When two cars crash do they bounce apart and go backwards or do they come to a complete stop with a few small bits flying off. Go look on liveleak for some examples.

So the censorship is done by Spectrum then?

The Chinese are talking about putting a satellite at a Langragian point to monitor space weather.

Though the Chinese are good at making up all sort of missions for the next 50 years which probably won't all eventuate..

I said "Most Australians" as in the average Australian, OCAU members tend to be a bit more educated and smarter than the average Australian to be honest!

For example I'm willing to bet my left nut that more Aussies watched Big Brother last night than watched Curiosity decent live!
