Default Windows 7 not taking up the full screen

I got a new PC today and I installed Windows 7 and everything went fine but when I logged in and I was taken to the home-welcome screen the screen wasn't at the full resolution - it wasn't taking up all of the screen. When I tried to change the screen resolution to 1920x1080 (my monitor's native resolution) it wasn't listed. It looks like there is a black border a few inches wide around the edges of the screen.

I plugged the DVI-D cable into the monitor and the first GTX 460 using the connector port on the left hand side.

Would installing the graphics card drivers do the trick? I'm positive that I have the cable plugged in the right way as everything is displaying on screen. Should I re-install Windows?

Thank you

Installing the drivers now, will report in on if they help

Also when I click on "Display" under screen resolution I get: "Generic PhP monitor on standard VGA graphics adapter" - can anyone make sense of that?

Do you have a driver for your monitor? Install that, too.
