7200rpm drives inside, and they run far too hot inside the enclosures.

Yeah they run quite hot in those enclosures very nice in a server though, power consumption is good aswell.

Was thinking more for use as a backup drive, still justifying the 2TBs I've bought recently for the Microserver (incl yours LOL). If they run hot I'd have to break it out of the enclosure, not sure I'm happy voiding warranty on such a large drive to do it.

Had another caviar black fail on me (Bad Sectors) this makes like 4-5 or so in 2 years that have had problems.
I'm abit iffy about caviar black drives now. So going to need to RMA it like the last :/ So now I need a 3tb drive for data storage backup unless I get the replacement and hope for a good rebuild. So what drives are cheap and good.

Just shelled out over $1,500 for 12x 2TB Hitachi 7200RPM drives... running 6 in RAID5 and planning for the other 5 in RAID5 (backup) with a hot spare...
Kind of regretting it now Should've gone with 6x 4TB from B&H...I just hope by the time these arrays are filled up that 4TB drives of decent reliability & price are available (i.e. Hitachi or Toshiba if they can release one?). What was the go with the 4TB Hitachis - does WD have them or Toshiba?

Toshiba was only given the technology to make the 1/2/3TB model Hitachi drives but can now work with that technology to produce a 4TB drive if they wish. HGST (previously Hitachi Global Storage Technologies) who is now owned by the Western Digital Corporation is still making all of their previous drives, including the 4TB models. WD have yet to announce a 4TB drive of their own. I'm currently building a NAS with 10 drives RAID 6, and would have liked to use 4TB drives, but sadly only Ultrastars were available which are too costly for me. So I went with WD 3TB Reds.

If you want to keep the enclosure looking undamaged forget about it. The enclosure is practically destroyed to open it up. Much more difficult to get the drives out compared to the XL series enclosures.

Is there any downside to using enclosure disks out of an enclosure except for warranty?
I have 8 slots to fill - 4 x4tb is the same storage as 8 x 2tb and cheaper - but 8 x 3tb is
