I can see the problem, but it wasn't an issue until you pointed it out. It's not a huge colour difference.

Yep. It would all be much easier if the camera displayed the custom WB setting it calculated. (My Canon doesn't. Is there a brand that does?) Then you could gell based on the calculated value for the scene and not have all the trial and error. It can be hard to judge when you only have the LCD image preview to go on. That said rule-of-thumb works pretty well for outdoor daylight.

In LR4 you can change the WB with gradients or adjustment brushes. Handy, but nothing beats fixing it in camera.

Magic lantern will show kelvin and tint.

White balance the ambient and then gel the flash to suit. Very easy when you can get kelvin readings of both.

Either that, or use a flash for background fill. A low power flash on the pillars would have balanced the whites while also getting rid of the shadows at the bottom of the pillars.

edit: My bad, magic lantern won't calculate kelvin with flash.
