Wooden Mario

So I had some free time at work and I wanted to make something fun for a theatre room. My idea brewed into making a wooden pixel block Mario figure.
After a while I realised cutting up 150 odd blocks wasn't going to take the 10 minutes I wanted to and ended up an hour or so. A quick sketch up was done and painted quickly and taken home.

After a few days of sitting up in the shed I took some free time to start thinking how I was going to glue him together to be a decent wall piece. Problems begin... My sloppy freehand job at work meant nothing would sit flush or straight, or if it did, there would be gaps. (I was limited to a ruler, permanent marker, bowed scrap wood and a old bansaw with no guide before anyone suggests patients next time

)
I hit up my old man for suggestions, and in return received a nice pine frame he had just finished for doing carvings with his CNC Router

After a few coats of sky blue paint, some sanding (for his skin colour) and some shoe polish; I set it out the best I could with some liquid nails and the end result is a win for me

Measures roughly 600 x 450 x 55 and weighs a fair bit :P
Edit: Mario sticks out another 25mm making it 80mm thick.

Any suggestions for a next piece?

Made myself a hot plate stand for pot's etc today.
Needs a paint and varnish but its looking good

I have been trying to gather up some more wood to do a zelda pixel too. I have been busy with building a house so haven't had much time for fun.

Wow! Never expected such a reply from one image

I was looking into selling these, not sure how much people are willing to pay though? Time to draw out and cut etc on top of material makes it hard to ask a price.

QuakeDude these are quite thick for place mats (45mm), I could make some out of mdf and sized to place mats for dinner plates if that's what you are after? Unsure what you would use to protect the paint and wood from any spills however. Alternately the CNC router we used could easily smash through perspex? Cut out the mushroom and paint on the reverse.

I can make these different sizes but not any bigger than this. Actually struggling to get off cuts from work this size (240x45)

I made a second and painted them.
Now it is win

Final size is 240mm wide 230mm high and 45mm thick (each)

Also had some free time to start working on Zelda!
I am hoping to get a rough outlay picture of him by Sunday, more painting to do tomorrow.

Here is a bit of the process I go through now

After some brainstorm and calculations...

It all starts with free offcuts from work (only good part about my job :P)

I then cut that into strips, then the strips into blocks (I have a bucket on the end of the bandsaw to collect all the "pixels"

It is then clamped down and sanded so that the blocks sit roughly level when glued down, this is only half the blocks

Only a small section of blocks being painted...

I am hoping to be able to either find a cheap frame to size or get some ply or thin mdf as a background and have Links sword smashing out of the frame off the size.
I would like some suggestions of colours or possible backgrounds to fit him onto if not.
The full size will end up about 55cm high and 88cm long, so he is pretty big for a "small" project

I reckon mushroom cup coasters would be boss! and definitely small enough that off-cuts wont be a problem

this is awesome, i've toyed with the idea of a minecraft block quilt for a while along the lines of

but it would work really well with wooden blocks too.

I'm surprised there is so much variation in the block heights, but i reckon it looks much better than if they were all exactly the same size.

nothing is glued or rock solid, this is just out as loose blocks for now until I find a frame :|

cup coasters would be doable, i'm going to look into it

oculi, that's an awesome quilt

as for the block height, that was the idea of sanding it down. The offcuts I get can be warped or slightly out (1-2mm) but it makes a big difference later :P
