You can take them on as hand luggage provided it will fit in the luggage compartment. The shorter headstock guitars are usually fine with this, like Musicman & EVH. A mate was able to carry on a Les Paul Custom from the UK.

Went and tried out a few lunchbox amps yesterday. I was hell-bent on the Mesa Mini-rectifier until I tried it. I spent about 20 minutes with it in the amp room and couldnt quite get into any of the sounds I dialed into it. Also tried a H&K tubemeister and had the same feeling, it just didnt appeal to me. Ended up trying out a dual terror and was almost instantly sold! Loved the dirt and cleans on the fat channel. I think the simplicity (3 dials per channel) appeals to me too AND it's quite alot cheaper than the mini-recto. I could get the amp and a 2x12 cab for the price of the mini-recto alone!
I've got a little more saving to go until I've got enough for both a Dual Terror and 2x12 cab, however I had a play on a micro-terror that was hooked up to 2 8" single cabs. The thing was hilariously LOUD! and has that similar sound that drew me to the dual-terror. I'm very tempted to get one of these little things to keep me occupied until I've got enough for it's bigger brother

Still in the process of tossing up between Cole Clark and Maton. I have tried the Cole Clark, and I really liked the angel but it's just too expensive.
The other small bodied guitar I have been recommended is the 808.. Mate of mine has one, yet to play it but it looks exactly like what I am after.. small body, easy to play with decent sound! Anyone here played one?? http://maton.com.au/product/performer-series

Cole Clark and Maton have completely different necks, so play one before deciding. I found the Maton neck profile not too dissimilar to my primary electric, so switching between the two is dead easy. I also found it faster, but your mileage may vary. They also sound completely different.

I was in Wagga for their annual jazz and blues fest last weekend, and was lucky enough to catch Pete Cornelius guesting with a couple of acts - and all I can say is _wow_. No practice, no charts, everything played by ear and on the fly, and I'm hearing guitar solos/fills and riffs that sound like they were handcrafted over years to fit that specific piece of music. It wasn't showy, it wasn't 1000 notes/min, it was just a perfect fit, melodic, interesting and beautiful.
Highly recommended if you can catch him live - He looks young too (< 30)... with 8 full length albums under his belt
