Default HP M1212NF MFP will not install

Hi all.

I am at my wits end and I need some help.

Firstly, PC specs:

Win7 Professional 64 bit
Asrock 990FX Extreme 3 motherboard
8GB RAM
1TB WD HDD
ATI 5750 1GB Sapphire gfx card

I have bought an HP multi function M1212NF and it simply will not install.

I run the install pack I downloaded from the HP website and it gets halfway through and tells me to unplug the cable and run the install again.

I don't have anything plugged in, the printer isn't even turned on when I install the software. It just gets to halfway through and stops.

I am following the instructions to the letter each time.

Steps to resolve this issue:

1. HP's troubleshoot page and three different variations of the install method.
2. I tried to install on another PC running Win7 Pro 64 bit
3. I turned off all startup software via msconfig, turned off windows firewall, turned on SNMP on my router, none of these things helped.
4. Manally gone into Add Printer, selected new port and browsed to my printer model and added that way, it fails and gives error 0x00000057.

In Devices, it shows up as a CD ROM connected to a USB Mass Storage.

If anyone is able to help I would be really grateful, if I need to put more info please let me know.

My level of IT skill is intermediate, I have worked as desktop support and done some network deployment in the past.

I have never had a printer installed on this PC and it is a new build as of January this year.

Completely at a loss and I am about to make this brand new printer into an anchor!

Is it a 64 bit installation pack that you are trying? If not, have you tried running the installation program in compatibility mode? Is the printer connected when you are running the installation? Does it say to have it connected? (My hp used to say not to plug it in until it tells you to...) Have you got a different printer cable to try?

It is a 64 bit installation pack I am trying.
I've tried running as Admin, but not in compatibility mode.
Maybe I should try for XP? The HP site allows me to get drivers for Win7 64 bit.

I have tried installing without connecting, as per the instructions, then out of frustration tried installing with connectivity. It fails no matter what I try.

I do have a different printer cable but the problem is the software says to not plug the printer in at all, so the failure occurs before a cable comes into the picture.

If it's a 64 bit driver, it should work ok. Why do you think it is saying to unplug the cable, if it isn't plugged in? Are you installing as a local printer, or network? Does the installation create any log files? Try contacting HP tomorrow. It's new so they should sort it out for you. Sorry I'm no use.

I'm installing it as a local printer, I suspect the install prog is buggy.

Fair call, I will give HP a shout, thanks for reading anyway mate.

I wonder why it's telling you to remove the cable, when you haven't got to connecting it? Strange.

Even stranger, it's telling me to remove the cable from the printer, when I have no cable connected to the printer, and certainly not between the PC and printer.
