Default Time to re-install. But.... no media?!

Hi all

I have a machine which runs Vista. I am also now in possession of an SSD, so have decided to start a fresh rather than ghosting or anything like that.

The machine I have (bought from another OCAUer) has a genuine Vista key - but I have no media from which to perform an install :-/

What are my options?

Cheers

The link is digital river, microsofts official download. You may want to find an alternative, but that is the general way to to do it. Burn the ISO and install.

ask a friend if they have one, ask your local PC store for a OEM copy or upgrade to Windows 7 if the PC needs extra RAM or something like that, you can get the OEM version

Ninja edit: Or you could find a legit torrent of the disc.

Hope it helps.

WTF ???

who's going to go to the trouble of searching for a "legit torrent" for something that is freely available on the net (see post above re digital river)

i dare say anything you find as a torrent will be a cracked iso, ie "pirated"

i have the ISO for all vista versions now, if the OP wants one posted.

Torrents are frequently a lot faster.

that wasnt what i was referring to, and i certainly have never seen any torrent speeds come anywhere near as fast as my downloads from other more reliable sources do, so i wonder what speeds your getting from all of your torrent downloads, must be super duper fast.

anyway, torrent speed is irrelevant here, my comment about torrents was more to do with the fact that most of the suppliers of "legit/genuine" windows operating system ISO's most definately would never provide them for downloading via torrent sites, and i dare say most of them made available via torrents would most likely be illegal, pirated, or pre-cracked ISO's, based on past history.

True but torrents set up correctly are usually faster, that is the whole bloody point and so that you can go back in several sessions and complete the download.

A lot of legitimate software is disseminated via torrents.

MS' server are not exactly slow, it will easily max out my connection and you know it's untouched. If you want it's a perfect opportunity to switch to the x64 version. Just be aware that even an SP2 iso will require quite a lot of updates, you may want to bring the box to a mate's place to sort it out after installing.

thanks for the input all. i'm already running vista x64.

and!

fortunately i managed to sneakily download the files (posted above) at work (for some reason we have to do any big downloads in the morning - something about the plan our company is on).

so the next challenge is to follow the instructions from the link above, and make a bootable USB for a speedy installation.

only thing i am pissed off about now is that i think the SSD i bought has no 3.5 - 2.5 adaptor bracket!!!

Check your case to see if it has a bit built in, a lot of new cases have one. In mine you have to take the floppy cover out, squeese a couple of clips, pull a metal piece out and the ssd screws onto it from the bottom. It isn't in the manual and it doesn't look like it is what it is until you pull it out.

this was the point i was trying to make about downloading these files from "torrents"

i still never saw any torrent download anywhere near as fast as i can download from a legit web server from my bigpond home adsl, plus there is no way you can guarentee a torrent download isnt free of shit, and you may find a vista Iso that may look like it is legit, but may turn out to be a pirated or pre-cracked Iso, in which case your not going to know till u install it.

sorry, but i just think torrenting on the whole is lame (thats why lots of kids use it) and if these guys knew how to get stuff from the net via alternative methods, there is no way they will use torrents again.

MS have a usb tool that makes it extremely easy, not sure about vista but its made for 7, works for 8 too. Worth a shot at least.
