Was the Momentus 500gb 5400rpm drive inside. Restoring game data as we speak. The latest firmware along with all usernames and passwords remained, I'm guessing these are written to something that is hardwired to the PS3.
Total win! |

Im in the current situation , hope that someone can help me confirm how i can resolve
My current PS3 fat has a 320GB 5400 Seagate , fans are starting to fail so its only a matter of time till ot overheats (summer is coming) and dies So i got my hands on a new 160GB slim and would like to confirm as follows Use the transfer utility to copy my data over from the fat to the new slim, i use Play TV so can shrink it down to less than 160GB by deleting alot Then use the backup utility to an external USB 250GB drive have on hand Replace the Slims 160GB with the 320GB and restore from the USB drive all my data to the slim with the 320GB drive as it would have needed to be formatted when moving PS3's sound ok ? Cheers |

Expect Not , but the data trafer does not affect firmware versioning ? as this is on the onboard flash and not HDD
The Fat PS3 is 4.11 (evil) and the Slim PS3 is 3.71 (not so evil) |

You'll need to update the firmware. No way around it.

I've got a 120gb slim PS3 and now that i've got PlayStation+ I'm finding it's not big enough.
Everybody saying that as long as you use a 2.5" drive that's no bigger than 9.5mm you're OK, well the Western Digital WD Blue WD10JPVT 1TB is 9.5mm, any ideas if that'll fit / work?

1) Any 2.5" hdd that is 9mm height should work? (7mm hdd as well) 2) New hdd should be formatted as fat32? 3) when backing up to an external drive, should that be FAT32 as well?

just for the record backing up & full format of a drive by the PS3 will take up a total of 18-24 hours (depends on the amount of shit you have but its a common figure regardless). I'm pretty sure a Quick Format of the new drive is fine tbh.

It depends on whether you have a NOR or NAND system.
Have it on there just incase.

I've had a 640gb 5400rpm drive in mine for a couple of years now. No idea what it is. I do remember the process was pretty smooth, even for a rookie like me.

Yeh have WD blue 500Gb in mine for 6 months now, no probs. In fact I used to get a wee bit of stuttering with PlayTV playback with old drive, but smooth as now
