Default Normal for new intel chipsets to "boot" a few times?

I've had my i7 for over 6 months now and every time I turn it on it does this:
- Press power button
- PC powers up
- "click" sound heard, PC powers off
- PC turns itself back on
Might repeat 2 or 3 times, then boots normally. No issues.

I notice after flashing the new EFI bios to my board it displays some different screen on the 2nd and 3rd time it "boots" then shows the normal bios screen on the final boot.

Is this a normal post for a z68 chipset? I have a GA-Z68XP-D3

My friend recently got an ivy bridge z77 system and he said the first time he turned it on it turned itself off then back on before booting. I dunno if his still does it or not though.

Anyone else experience this? Was just wondering if this is normal behaviour. Can anyone explain the process that occurs during these boots?

Might be that it's running through the different sata controllers. Quick look shows that your board has a Marvell 88SE9172, if you don't have anything connected to it (i'm assuming the black/grey sata ports) see if you can disable it in the bios.

quick look also shows that you have a msata slot for an ssd, you might be able to turn that off in the bios too.

Cool

Just looked and found these:

http://forums.tweaktown.com/gigabyte...68-boards.html

http://forum.giga-byte.co.uk/index.php?topic=7895.0

Seems to be a common occurance like you said, guess it's okay then as long as it is not damaging my hardware? Once it tries a few times it boots normally and can leave my PC on for 2 weeks with no issues

I've had at least one board do that. I'm pretty sure it's normal provided your BIOS settings aren't being lost or anything.

I only get the issue if my CPU is overclocked btw. Not when stock.

My old gigabyte z68 boards used to do that a lot as well, restart 5 to 6 times before finally booting... updating to latest bios and also updating the backup bios to same version helped me a lot.

also my X79 system restarts once every time but only once

So we've identified that its only Gigabyte boards..

Don't they notice this during R&D? Seems pretty common at first glance.

Not just Gigabtye boards - my Asus Z68 and Z77 boards do this as well once overclocked.

Same here with an Asus p8Z77-V. Given that the machine is rarely cold booted, I hadn't even noticed it.
