Default Anyone know when we will see some Piledriver chips for AM3+?

Everything I heard last year when I built my system ready for bulldozer was Q2-Q3 this year... Nothing seen or heard anywhere since. I'm starting to really get pissed off with this crappy AMD 260 @ 4Ghz, its usless as all fuck!

Haven't heard a darn thing... after Bulldozer turned out to be a bit less than what people were expecting I think AMD might be lying low for a while...

Perhaps upgrade to a 1090T or such in the meanwhile?! That CPU must be painful...

I think October was the general rumour-mill consensus... make of that what you will.

Dont really have any cash to get 2 cpus, just started my apprenticeship so I'm a bit poor for a while. Id rather wait for the new chips to come out than buy both. I'll need a new vid card in comming months aswell as I'm not sure that the 5850 I picked up second hand will be fast enough for an 8 core cpu at 4-5ghz.

I was thinking that they would be out quite a while ago and didnt want to buy another inbetween chip. At least D3 with low physics runs pretty well, and the new patch is out tonight. Should keep me busy for a few more months.

I found the CPU was holding me back more than the GPU in D3. Went from an Athlon x2 250 -> Phenom II x4 955 with noticeable improvements.

On the server side, Abu Dhabi which is the dual die MCM (the same die Vishera will use) is supposedly going to get released next month:
AMD May Release First Opteron "Abu Dhabi" Server Chips Next Month

There haven't been any new rumours about AM3+ Vishera since July (which stated the possible October release date) so who knows what's going to happen really...

A lot of us are still hoping for an October release

been looking forward to PD after BD was released also. picked up 1 of the last remaining thuban x6's instead.

i recon the rumoured Oct date may be a little optimistic personally. don't think the PD based Trinity (FM1/FM2) have even hit retail yet despite official reviews being out for a couple of months.

unless the OP can locate a dirt cheap 2nd hand X6, probably worth while hanging out till the 8 core hits. whether the 8 core Vishera proves to be a decent upgrade for current x6 thubans remains to be seen.

regarding the old 5850, they were a very decent GPU. with a reasonable aftermarket HS & a slight bump in volts, the OC'ed pretty well. mine did 850 core fairly easy, never did test the outer limits on that card. resolutions up to 1920, did a decent job without dropping settings too much.

Apparently the press might see some Vishera chips around IDF time:
AMD’s 40nm Hondo almost ready

The Intel Developer Forum this year kicks off on September 11 and AMD plans to snag a few journalists and show them parts like Trinity desktop parts and the rest of the Virgo platform, next generation Vishera AMD FX cores, but the new Hondo 40nm processor could be the most interesting part AMD has to show off.

Have to say this is probably the longest time I have gone without buying a new cpu. Still on the 1090T here.

we might see something before the year is out CPU-wise, already had a leak on the 8350.

there has been some news on the MB front.
Asus has released the updated 990FX 'sabertooth rev2' MB with the 'Crosshair V - Z' soon to follow. dunno what's up on the Gigabyte front tho.

It's what happens when one drops and fumbles the ball a few times. Those small things add up into large issues. Correcting them takes time. The good news is that they've stablised their financial side. (Anyone who claims "AMD is dying" or "Going to be dead" has clearly not look at AMD's finances).

They've also changed direction with the new CEO. His previous experience was with Lenovo (one of the big OEMs of the world); he is pushing AMD into the direction of giving OEMs priority (desktops, notebooks, large servers, etc). Since it makes quite a tidy sum.

In the past, AMD was enthusiast-oriented in terms of public relations and releases. (You can't break into the mainstream computing public this way...Where the real money is.)

The upcoming ones (Piledriver-based) are tweaks which can be seen more like a major revision, in order to buy them time until 2013 releases. Just incremental improvements at best. Nothing major in architectural changes. The status quo between AMD and Intel doesn't change. Maybe expect some minor price drops from Intel as a response.

Nothing major until 2013 releases like Steamroller-based APUs, etc...Where AMD makes a bigger attempt to actually correct the performance issues of the Bulldozer architecture. (They've explained what they've done at Hot Chips 2012...Its now a question of whether their execution is effective enough to be more competitive with Intel. We won't know until their implementation is reviewed by reputable hardware sites.)

The mobo makers aren't happy with AMD either. They've had to hold back releases for a few months now, because its pointless to release a new mobo without a CPU!

You aren't going to see new chipset mobos until Steamroller. They aren't even going to bother doing anything major to the chipsets on existing platforms. AMD is focusing on CPU side. (It's their current weakness).

Intel recently announced updates to their low end Sandy Bridge lines (Celeron and Pentium); while Core i3 gets Ivy Bridge love. And Core i5 gets a model or two, shoved into its line up.

...It leads me to believe they anticipate AMD's Trinity desktop processor coming soon and they want to get in first to the market.

One shouldn't be surprised when the new CEO cleaned up AMD by firing off all the marketing/liaison people that over-hyped the Bulldozer release. They're now taking the stance of not saying anything until they have something to release. (Whether it be worth releasing is a different story.) ie: Less style, more substance.

Right now, I'm planning on a 2013 upgrade of 3 to 4 systems in the household (nothing top-end. More likely mainstream-budget end)...Unless AMD pulls a rabbit out of their hat with Steamroller-based processors, I'm leaning towards Intel's Haswell as the preference.

So it's official - the 1090FX chipset has been scrapped (or pushed back to coincide with Steamroller release)?

Not that it really matters - from memory it was just a new southbridge - it would have given 900 series users two more SATA 6Gb/s ports and onboard USB3; and most 900 series motherboards have auxilliary PCIe controllers for USB3 and extra SATA ports too.

Pretty much. No point wasting any more engineering resources to what is effectively a new revision CPU. (Piledriver is Revision C0 Bulldozer). The focus is on Steamroller APUs for all their future desktop processor lines. New socket and revised/updated chipset.

As for the original thread question:

The answer is October 18th (USA) or 19th for Australia due to timezones.

...One month from today.

I don't see anything related to the release any where!
