What model Leopold should I look at? How is the build quality on the Leopold?

And I should definitely start with Blue switches?

Edit : How do the DAS keyboards compare to Filco? They are $20 cheaper than the Filcos at AUSPCMarket.

Just got my Filco Majestouch with Cherry Browns - in multicam no less! Beautiful bit of kit! I was using a Black widow itch blues; not as colicky but still great feedback. Certainly rocking my boat ATM

200R: compact/ no numpad, 500R: full 104 key, 700R: premium compact. Build quality is good. You would be hard pressed to find better value than a 500R for around $120 posted from PCCG.

Aren't the 700Rs 87-key? Plus, they have media keys, if that's important.

Great keyboard, I got the same but it's a ninja, thought I wouldn't get used to having no backlighting but it's forced me to touch type and get to know the keyboard better. Nice and compact too compared to the old G15 which is actually still going strong after a good 3-4 (maybe more?) years!

Nice summary. I'm pretty tempted to replace this Blackwidow with a 700R, but I do miss the numpad when I use the Poker and I like the pretty LEDs on the Ducky.

Tough choice between Ducky and 700R.

Thanks, thinking of putting in the order tomorrow, so I'll think about it a bit more.

Had a quick look at the Leopold and it looks similar to the Filco. What makes the Filco better? Better build quality?

How about the Das keyboard I mentioned? they are $139 posted at AUSMarketPC.

What colour switches should I get? I was thinking of browns instead of blues. Are blues OK for gaming? What switch has the best balance for typing/gaming?

This switch type is my main hangup. Can't decide what to start with. I'd love as many opinions as possible on this, so please chime in guys.

After playing with a Leopold with red switches for a few months I'm still finding myself a bit heavy handed and bottoming out on keys a lot. I've decided to try o-rings, any recommendation between the three variants found here?

I have tried Cherry blues, blacks, reds and buckling springs while gaming and I definitely prefer the blues over eveything else. It's not so much the noise that I like (because I have music blaring through headphones during gaming anyway) it's the feel.

There is no such thing as a gaming switch or a typing switch in my opinion. I've heard of typists preferring the softness of reds while others like the tactility of the blues or buckling springs. It's all preference.

Try the blues, you won't be disappointed if you don't mind the clicky clack of it.

My leopold fc700r just came.

First impressions: red switches are so light! The space bar feels a little funny, slightly more difficult to push down and also feels like it has a softer landing than the other keys.

Another vote for blue switches. I used a Das Keyboard for 2 years (now using a Topre). The Das was my only cherry switch keyboard, and I loved it. I gamed a lot on it too, and never had a problem with it. The main thing with the Das is the glossy finish, which shows dust and fingerprints very easily. The reason I got the Das keyboard back in the day was not because it had mechanical switches (that was a plus, due to life of the switches compared to rubber domes) but because the keyboard didn't have any labels on it. I had no clue what the benefits of a mech keyboard were back in the day, and didn't really care to be honest. Just wanted a keyboard without any key markings

Oh, and the Das still works fine. Just in desperate need of a clean...

I think if you're looking for the keyboard that is furthest away from a rubber dome in feel, the blue switch is what you're after.
