I just returned from six weeks in Canada and the USA and found the same thing with my 28 Degrees mastercard...most places made you sign (while a lesser number of places allowed pay pass or pin).

Only issue I've had in the US was petrol pumps. They have credit card machines on them but want a US Zip Code. Only other way to pay is to pre-pay an estimated amount, then go and collect your change if you overpaid, or it stops pumping when you reach that limit.

Pretty much everywhere else required a signature on an electronic pad.

Just call up and ask for a chip card?

That's what I did and my card still had like 2 years left on it.

we went to Europe, and used Travellex. Cashcard or what they call it..
Opening deposit was fee free i think..

Though they tried to rip us off when we were closing the card as all the forms were filled out, sent through, was told it would take up to 2 weeks to get the refund, then 2 weeks later we rang to see where it was to be told they had no record of it... even though we were onto the phone to the rep when the forms were sent through originally..
We were then told we had to send through the paperwork again.. and it would be up to 2 weeks to come through... blah blah

thing is the dollar had dropped a fair bit, so it was a good $300 difference in payment back to us.

needless to say we kicked up a stick and got the refund we were due.. within 2 days

but for the money side of things while over seas, it was really good..
