It's important to note that this only includes up to the Lambda Core level. They still have work to do on recreating the Xen levels.

Here I thought this thread was resurrected from June announcing it had been cancelled.
It's only taken almost a decade, but at least they're finally releasing it albeit not fully complete.

HL2 came out in, 2004? It's less than a decade. I'm surprised they are releasing XEN separate later though..

My take on Xen:

Back in 1997, games depended on our imaginations filling in the blanks a bit. What were the floors made from in the Black Mesa complex? It doesn't mater, it was a bunch of labs and offices and our brains filled in the gaps because we know what to expect of industrial flooring. But Xen kind of sucked, because everything was alien so all those low-res textures had to be taken at face value. What were those striped-texture pillars that came out of the ground? Were they meant to be striped, or ribbed? Dry like trees, or wet like something by HR Geiger? So Xen was a bit let down by the technology of the time and many people consider it the sucky end part of Half-Life. Valve ended up leaving Xen out of HL2 entirely.

But Xen could be made incredible with today's graphics. Not just weird looking textures, but totally alien plantlife and bioluminescence and all kinds of things.

I also suspect the makers of Black Mesa are having a hard time making Xen. They either haven't started on it, or have realised it's going to take a lot more time and effort than photographing new textures of industrial concrete and barrels.

Xen felt tacked on to me.. and it looked AWFUL. It was a bad way to end such a great game. But agree these days they could make it look better; how much I don't know. There is always the limitation of source.

I really liked xen, and felt very lucky to find the jump far pants to go with the HEV suit, xen would have been very hard without that upgrade.

xen was a bit crap, very much just a boss fight really.

hl2 mods are a bit thin on the ground, is it hard to use or expensive?
