You don't need to know how something works not to be taken in by a scam. You just need some critical faculties. When I was on P plates I pulled into a garage for some petrol and got told that my water pump was broken. I didn't need to know how the water pump worked to know that it was a load of crap.

I can't say that I entirely agree with you. I've never really believed that being vulnerable to any tricks or theft means that people deserve it. I certainly don't believe that it excuses the criminals. I realise this isn't what you were saying, but sometimes when people say things like that, it can appear like they're alleviating some of the responsibility from the perpetrators.

Absolutely, and that's why I say "sortof" because at the end of the day no matter how dumb or naive people are they don't really deserve it as such.

I've had two of these phone calls.

The first one was a happy string-along when we had mates over stifling themselves with laughter on speakerphone.

The second one, I used something I'd heard before for inspiration. Just substitue a few words with "Interpol" and "Special Branch" instead and you get the idea.

Enjoy!

a few months ago i went to my aunties place to fix up a problem with her laptop, nothing major, anyway, next day she rang me to tell me a guy rang her to tell her that she had some problems with her computer and he wanted to help her fix it, and she very politely said to him "oh no, its ok, i had my laptop fixed yesterday so it working ok now" and then she hung up

i pissed myself, but not sure what she might have done otherwise.

a few weeks ago i got a call (indian guy) and he said something about my computer needs fixing, and i said "what computer" and he got very angry and said "so you dont know what a computer is, well your stupid" and he hung up ??? (from his response, i think he actually thought i said "whats a computer)

I kind of wish I got to toy with these wankers. I notice there is a slight audio pause when I get calls from a call centre so I just hang up before they have a chance to talk. Maybe I'm missing out.

ROFL....I just got one of these calls. I just turned it around on them, and when I got bored, which was rather quickly....I just gave them a few very choice words and hung up.

Felt good.

I usually don't answer anything that comes up as "overseas" on my Caller ID. But I have answered the phone in the past to find someone with a thick indian accent claiming to be from Microsoft.

One sure fire fix... Preach to them.

These guys drive me crazy, I get calls from them all the time, sometimes 3 times a day. I've tried hanging up, swearing at them, calling them idiots, even explained to them that I've worked in IT for 25 years and they are the worst scammers I've come across.

These aren't random calls, these guys have my home number, my name and address which scares me somewhat.

Just had the 4th call today, so I politely asked to speak to the manager. I got passed to some other thickly accented moron who I questioned.

Me: Where did you get my address and phone number from?
Him: Microsoft.
Me: Bullshit, all my registered products are at a previous address, where did you get my info?
Him: I got it from Bill Gate's diary.
Me: Listen you fucking moron, call me again and I get the police involved, understand?

They hung up on me. Again.

How do I get them to piss off and leave me alone?
