Default error at start up

I put the mobo cpu and ram from my computer into a new case for my son to use along with a new seagate40gb and new dvdrom but on start up it goes thru normal bios stuff, shows video card cpu drives etc then comes up with an error message about 80pin cable not connected.it has brand new ide ribbons triple checked that all is plugged in correctly.it says f1 to continue but it only goes to where it says checking DMI pool data and thats it just sits there.can restart go into bios etc but no changes make any diff.board/cpu/ram came straight out of working computer didnt even seperate them. possible cable fault?

The ide cables need to be rated ATA 100 or so plus i think to be 80 pin OR it may be ATA 66. I would first try a different cable - ie pinch the one from the cdrom and bootand see what happens or find wom good 80 pin cables (they're cheap).

Of course it never hurts to look at the jumper settings, it should be the generic master/slave setting, but can be cable select if the mobo supports it. But i would try swapping cables first and making sure that the HDD is okay - it could be a bung HDD.
