Big question of courde for everybody: How does Conroe fold. I have 2 systemsrunning with the new CPU, and after some testing I can confirm: Much better productivity and greatly reduced power consumption. The only drawback I see is that the X6800 does not have HT enabled, which works so well with the Pentium D 955 and 965 when folding.

We need one of the OCAU sponsors to offer folders a magnificent Conroe special, in the interest of greater production!

Not too bad. Merom can do better. Purchase a Core Solo Mac mini (least expensive model) and a Merom ES chip. Grab a 1" putty knife. Have at it!

I wonder amongst us who has contacts with the OCAU sponsors to arrange such a deal. I know Computer Alliance is offering some stuff atm & good old Pluscorp are also offering special pricing. Looks like it will be very popular & in short supply ![]() I for one am keen to have a Conroe in my stable to try this beast out ![]() Teddy

Notable differences... Mini Mac plus upgrade is available now, and will be much cheaper for both initial cost and long term electric bills. When Conroe is released (and then later is available at retail), it will have chips at a higher GHz than Merom, and as shown, will probably overclock decently for a first stepping, but costs more now and long term. You can't go wrong with any of these, Woodcrest, Conroe, and Merom. Last edited by 7im; 17th July 2006 at 3:27 PM. |

Just ordered the following from Computer Alliance:
Intel S775 Core 2 Duo E6600 2.4GHz CPU ASUS S775 P5B Deluxe Core 2 Motherboard DDR2 2GB G.Skill 800MHz PC6400 RAM Kit ZX I can see my production going up when it's all up and running ![]() I usually fold for 12 hoursish a day, but I will be running 2 instances with dual-core and of course, my time per frame is going to improve nicely over my San Diego 3700+. First 2 weeks though, I am going to run 24/7 as a stress test

Turn on when I get up, turn off before I go to bed at night....12-14 hours per day on average.
Dunno what the only 12 hours pd frown is about, as if anyone not folding 24/7 should somehow feel like they are letting the team down? I am comfortable with my output. |

Will see what CA can do once we get some better priced mainboards through and the chips are in decent supply.
Note the prices currently in Sponsors Specials for the chips are very close to cost, so you can use that as a idea on pricing. Prices are not expected to change much this year on chips, but boards and ram should come down (In short term though, RAM is going up right now). Volume buys for chips are meaningless as there are tiny margins and huge volumes already in place. http://forums.overclockers.com.au/sh...d.php?t=489513 Reminds me, no idea of how many of our machines are still folding here. Most are ancient and have been having speed/heat/noise issues when folding so had to turn folding off. We had 40 odd some years back. I will replace a lot of them with Conroes soon, and will get them back folding. Conroe should remove that noise/heat disincentive. Its a bit of a worry, I think last time i checked we were at least in the top 20 OCAU folders, I see we have fallen far. ......just checked and it seems my 2.4G P4 I am typing on is still chugging along. Some ancient version of the folding client! Bout time I updated. Think I'll go scrounge for the X6800 sample if I can extract it off the techs!

Thanks Xaos, I'm sure a lot of Folders will take the opportunity to upgrade to a Conroe in the near future.
Getting CA back to full strength Folding wise will be great and help with the push to No1.
