Default Public Lectures

Hi fellow science minded people,

Im originally from WA so im a bit of a newb in Sydney. While in WA the University of WA was really good with public lectures they were always having interesting people in to speak.

Now fast forward to Sydney and I hardly know the names of any Uni's so knowing which ones are good for public lectures is beyond me.

So who can list some universities that are good for this? A link to their public lectures list would also be good. Im mainly interested in physics or evolution style stuff however a full list would be nice for other members

Both of these are at the Sydney Observatory, just near the Harbour Bridge.

The Observatory's annual By the Light of the Southern Stars lecture

Saturday 20 January 2007
7.30pm followed by telescope viewing from 9pm – 10.30pm

Hear well-known astronomers and philosophers, Dr Charley Lineweaver, David Reneke and Dr John Feller, battle out the status of Pluto and then cast your vote as honorary members of the Observatory Astronomical Union. Entertaining and insightful for the whole family.

Dr Charley Lineweaver, a great speaker who is highly sought after to give public talks, is a Senior Fellow, Planetary Science Institute at the Australian National University. He has wide fields of interest relating to some of the most exciting of current astronomical research including addressing the question 'Is our solar system typical?' and examining the early history of the universe.

Mr David Reneke is news editor of Sky & Space magazine. He has over 40 years experience in astronomy with links to some of the world's leading astronomical institutions. David also teaches astronomy at college level, is an invited speaker at astronomy conventions throughout Australia, a feature writer for major Australian newspapers, and is currently a science correspondent for ABC and commercial radio speaking on dozens of stations each week across the country on astronomy and space science issues.

Dr John Feller claims to be both the Hon. Consul-General for Pluto and the Head of Plutonian Homeland Security. In a letter to The Sydney Morning Herald on 26 August 2006 after the new definition of a planet was adopted by astronomers in Prague, he issued a warning to the people of the planet Earth beginning 'Plutonians everwhere, appalled by your representatives' decision to do the unthinkable'. A highly knowledgeable and witty man, in his spare time he is a consultant paediatrician to the Sydney Children's Hospital.

I think it's little known that most university lectures are public lectures. We had a few sit-ins during some of my 3rd year units.

Default AMS 2007 Conference

Keep an eye on this http://www.latrobe.edu.au/mathstats/...ences/AMS2007/
It is the 51st 2007 au maths society con being held in melbourne. A ticket down (up?) there is cheap and normally you can just turn up and sit in on the public lectures which are designed to be accessable to the layman. They are not all maths and most years one or two of the public lectures are on something related to general cosmology or the like.
Last year it was held in sydney at macquarie uni and the public plenary was given by Terry Tao, the 2006 field's medalist.

You may need to ask first though, UWA would allow it but you normally needed permission from the head of whichever department you were interested in... probably more for numbers planning!

I gave a few guest lectures in nuclear proliferation whilst at UWA, and one of hte lectures that normally had only 20 people needed to squeeze in another 20 chairs!

Actually they aren't. In practise they operate like public lectures because no one ever checks a role to find out who is actually enrolled and people who are enrolled might attend irregularly so a new face does not raise suspicions.

But technically speaking a university lecture is private unless advertised otherwise.
