Default Can't remove heatsink from Slot 1 PII 400

Hi,

I've bought a new heatsink for my 2nd box, 'cos the Intel fan (like the one on the right here) has developed a horrible whine. Problem is, I can't get it off!

I'ev got it off the motherboard, and unlatched the fan housing from the front. There are what look like four torx screws, but they are jammed in really tight - I'm pretty sure I've stripped one of them already, so wanted some advice before I go any further. Am I supposed to take the back off or something?

Have you tried using an automatic screw driver? Get one of these, they save heaps of effort, time and trouble.

You shouldn't have to undo any torx screws to remove the heatsink. I did one a few days ago, it isn't that hard.

Have a look at this guide:

damned computer.
i wrote a rather long reply and it crashed. now i have to write it all again. lol

ok.
the PII heatsink consists of two parts.

there's the part the fan attaches to and there's the part that attaches to the cpu.
the first part is attached to the second part by screws that require a small allen key to remove. (the four torx screws you mention).

the second part is a steel plate that has six pins that pass through the PCB of the cpu. you can see two of the pins in your pic. at the top and the bottom.
after the six pins pass through the pcb, the two you can see in your pic plug into the plastic casing of the cpu.
the other four have clips that hold the plate to the cpu.

pic of the back of a PII hsf. showing the 6 pins and the two clips
the bit sticking up at the top is the first part of the heatsink.

you don't need to remove the first part to remove the plate. but you do need to remove the plastic to remove the plate.
clear as mud eh?

now depending on the heatsink you're replacing this one with, you may only need to remove the first part of the heatsink. (some PII hsf's clip onto the steel plate)
but most likely you'll need to remove the whole lot.

*Mental note: hunt down and kill the sadistic c$nt who designed this CPU.*

you'll need a very small allen key.
just slide it into the hole of the screw and twist. it'll be pretty tight.
