All,
Need your advice again. I shutdown the pc and XP got stuck at the "shutting down" screen. Rebooted and now XP won't start, says " ....the file ..\system32\config\system is corrupt or missing. I booted to 98SE and checked. There is a file called "system" about 5 mb and a file called system.sav I moved the file "system" to another place, renamed system.sav to system, rebooted and XP jumps to the XP Setup screen and asks for the setup cd as its about to copy the system files again. (The part that takes about 40 minutes duirng a normal install) Anyway this is not what I want. So is the file "system" a user specific file cause I'm thinking of copying the file from my friends pc.

Thats your registry. You have only one option, and thats to format and reinstall.

OK, I fixed the problem.
I had to go to the system restore directory, find the latest restore point, copy the registry_machine_system and registry_machine_software files to the config\system directory and rename the files to system and software respectively. Boot into XP ok, did a proper system restore to this morning's system restore point just to be safe to maintain a set of synchronised files. |
