Well Bollocks, having just purchased an AXP2400 T'bred for $135 I think that type of CPU would make an ideal start. I know they are only 266 FSB but that should make the slection of a cheap m/b even easier. Also the PC2100 DDR ram has come down a lot.

I'll be running a Volcano 7+ on mine, not sure if we want to go to non-stock HSF but for overclocking they are certainly worth it.

My $0.02 worth

Most advanced technology www.mat.com.au (a sponsor here) sell atx cases for $44. I'm sure you could arrange free shipping from them if you asked . Maybe a 2400+ cpu(~$150) and 256mb of pc2100 (~$50). No idea about a motherboard, a7n266-vm is a cheap one but no overclocking features and don't know how high an athlon it supports.

CPU - best BFYB will be an XP - perhaps a 1700 if you can find one ...

Mobo: SHUTTLE MK35N, ASUS A7N266-VM, ALBATRON KX400-8XV - all come in arounf the $100 - $120 mark. I think the Albatron might be a good buy as it seems to have some nice o/cing features ... GD sells the Albatron for $119 ...

AXP 2400+ $159 (MAT)
256Mb PC2100 RAM $59 (Gamedude)

8Gb Hdd = $0

I'm not a AMD expert, but is the 2400+ a better overclocker compared to say a 2200+?

and remember, if we are looking at o'cing this boxen, cooling is a must. The standard AMD HSFs are not up to that sort of job so the cost needs to be incorporated.

The 2400+ is only around $5 more expensive than the 2200+ and overclocks better. Average 2200+ o/c = 2113mhz, average 2400+ o/c = 2348mhz (according to www.cpudatabase.com anyway)

Yeah Volcano 7+'s are awesome cooling, but they retail for around ~$50

Which brings up the question, are we after noise (ie. high rpm) or something quiet (low rpm)?

Personally I don't mind a bit of noise, but I'm sure other people won't enjoy sleeping around a jet engine.

I say we go with the cheaper option. get the 2400+ but use stock heatsinks.

The winner can always put something beefier on it if they want.

But a 2400+ in a A7N266-VM is not bad. Would be better if the mobo had chanable fsb without modding the board as just a little bump on fsb never hurts a system with stock cooling.

But i dont think there is many all in 1 mobos that would fit the bill when it comes to overclocking unless its a pricey nf2 igp mobo.

I see MAT do a kit (of sorts):

Quote:
Specifications

ATX Case with 300W power supply

AMD Athlon XP 2200+ CPU

Gigabyte 7VKML Motherboard

256MB PC2700 (333Mhz) DDR RAM

Price: $367.40
Board is an AIO - So just add the HDD, and you're pretty much done

I wonder how much more to upgrade to the XP2400.

Anyone know what the o/c capabilities of that board is?

the 7VKML board has reasonable OC capabilities, FSB changing, voltage changing, RAM timings, stuff like that, all without mods.
