Unwired.com.au goes live in Sydney today.
I have signed up to receive a modem and will give you a report to see how it goes. I am currently on Telstra Dial-up because of my battle axe block home and am keen to dump the 4.2 Billion dollar profit maker as my ISP. Latency claims by Unwired are pings of 70 - 160. So, it won't compete with Optus or Telstra line services but still craps over my 33.6 pair gain service. I should get the modem tomorrow.

If I could find a mobile phone plan with cheap long distance call rate I would go with unwired and I would drop telstra altogether.

Currently paying about $120 per month for ISDN access, the line rental is an absolute rip off. I will get rid of my whole home phone if this works, I am looking at getting a 512/128k plan. Edit: I just found out from WP that unwired are re-selling wholesale to other ISP, look at these prices from Exetel they look even better! Last edited by ZiBiS; 21st August 2004 at 10:12 AM. |

Got Unwired Friday - steady 256kbps over wireless rocks!!
Unwired's bird's eye coverage map here And a detailed view by street here Unwired are offering a 30 day money back guarantee (see their site for details), so as long as the maps show you have coverage, best bet is get a modem and if it doesn't work, take it back. |

100% uptime these past two days so far. I am very happy so far. I am just reloading Q3 to try some multiplayer. The ping is around 100 for me. I live on a hill and my reception is just near perfect. Wife is happy too... I have the 512 plan as well. (1GB limit plan.) All in all, very impressive performance these early days. Help desk people were good too.

Anyone know what state they are looking at doing next after NSW?
also can this be used with things like Pocket PC's, or do you have to use their modem and everything to connect? |

I don't think you'll get the "wabbit" to talk to any PDA's.
Apart from not being exactly portable, the modem is either ethernet or USB. Don't know of any PDA's with ethernet, and the PDA won't have the necessary USB drivers. |

LOL@nuxies simple answer
it is no because centrino uses 802.11b/g, known commonly as Wi-fi, there is talk of a centrino 2 that uses what unwired uses called 802.16(hasn't been ratified yet so it could be a-g) commonly known as Wi-Max, different frequencies, different antenna, different range... So in theory when unwire upgrade to a mobile (it is currently "mobile" but won't work if you are moving faster than a slow walk) version of their wireless then yes you could use it in a pda or laptop... And yes then it will be sweet...

Yes thats right. Unwired is using private radio frequency spectrum it pays for. So isn't on public spectrum.
I played Q3 on Sunday afternoon and averaged pings around the 160 mark. I wasn't playing on any of the bigger broadband sites though (Like game Arena or Optus' game sites.) It was enjoyable but against a couple of people who were obviously on the servers network I was railmeat. I played a couple of games of Sudden Strike 2 and was very happy with how things ran. I was playing against an overseas (USA) opponent with a ping of around 380 and the game was stable and great fun. I am looking forward to playing some Aussie friends though and should see a marked improvement with their cable and adsl connections. (I lost both games by the way - Haven't played in a year and a half.) Unwired currently doesn't have any game servers up and running. If I was them though it would be a priority! The speed is excellent and I can see Unwired being a big success if their customers can play against one another on in house links. It is a strange experience knowing and seeing the results of a 512/128 connection without a wire coming out of the wall into the modem! I can see huge benefits for Techies carrying around these modems when going to a home or business to fix a computing problem, they could download any software tool required using their own laptop and portable broadband connection. For country towns, this could be the answer. I am very happy with this solution to my 70 meter driveway problem. Anyone renting an apartment or house in Sydney should look at this option instead of a hardwire access because you take it with you when you move.
