Talking The 80's Rice Device(tm) - 56k warning! And you broadband users better look out too.

Many of you who are either old or have Foxtel, will remember a black car called KITT, driven by David Hasselhoff in an 80's TV series.

Back then that car was the coolest thing imaginable. So when I saw this kit in Dick Smith, I couldn't help myself.

So I grabbed a case aluminium case that would look more at home in a car stereo installation, as it was the only reasonably compact case that would hold the circuit board.

A quick bit of work with the drill and some motherboard mounts:

Rumaging around my shed I came across some network cable conduit that has a self adhesive backing. Ideal for what I had in mind.

Mark out the positions for drilling the holes.

And onto the drill press.

Ok, one of two mounting units that I'll need for this project.

Add 16 high intensity red LED's..

Some ribbon cable and some fancy soldering work.. Notice the negative leads of the LED's are all soldered to each other. Fortunately these all run on a common earth.

One LED bank. One to go.

Right, now onto the circuit board.

And connect both LED banks back to the PCB.

Mount the PCB into the case, apply the nibbler to the end of the case so the ribbon cable has somewhere to come out.

Attach molex and insert into PC...

Attach LED's to front of case behind transluscent plastic of front bezel.

End result (DivX 5, 250kb)

that divx doesn't show much.

it looks like it's just a single frame of video.

i don't see any flashing LED's or anything.

I loaded the whole thing over a dialup connexion. Damn it took ages!

Great mod though. I'm even playing the theme song just for the effect!

Great stuff as usual Bluesmurf!

Default hehehe i like it

I have the same kit but from jaycar.

Heres a thought it draws to many volts to hook directly to your hd modo header(led for hd activity) so get yourself an opto isolator and hook it up this way ie modo header to opto, opto to KIT kit.

If you want more info on this this just ask and I'll put a schematic together for it.

P.S. You can use an opto to run any header to any thing ie cc tube or neon (saw sum thing similar somewhere and modded it, if I find the original one I'll post it)

Have Fun
