and this lack of leadership resulting in chaos is why i'm beginning to throw my lot in with S2D/ReFS.

I have a couple to build, no doubt i'll be extra ranty about things i don't like.

just remember to align your storage throughout the stack:

it seems with every new FS / raid manager, we end up coming back to misaligned storage being the problem, the tech changes, the design and problems don't.

I mean, we've been told that 512e to 4k was a "transitional" thing, but here we are - some 8 years later and we're still doing it.

for lab / UAT - ZFS on older server hardware, for prod - Clustered Netapp (WAFL)

There are some things ZFS doesn't do. Which is why oracle / netapp didn't continue in court, easier to cross license / keep it a boys club.
