got in contact with shiny and organised new cables to get sent out

Not yet. I did order new 3.5mm cables for the speakers and did what Holdenkicks and Stonerboy suggested - downloaded a new driver and software package for the onboard sound (I realised I didn't have the software). Changed the setting to 5.1 and now the 3 plugs on the onboard now correspond to the 5.1 channels. Thanks for that.

Now I just have to await for the plug! Thanks Spyfox for the help with the Samsung cables.

cool. Are you getting the original samsung cable or something similar? how much was it?

spotted a couple on ebay from aussie sellers
