Generally get an rx580 unless an rx480 is noticably cheaper, they clock a bit higher eg. this one has 1425mhz oc clock vs typical 1288-1328 clocks rx480 usually have.

I was thinking of just picking up a second hand card in the meantime, rather than buying new. I occasionally see 480s up for sale around the $250-300 mark.

The other option was to just upgrade to a 1070 but I have a freesync monitor...

You can get new 480 4GB for 260 now . No way I'd pay that for even an 8GB 2nd hand

Why are the 480s so expensive at the moment? I bought one a few months ago from pccg for 250. The cheapest at the moment is 340.

Where can you get them for 260 I would like to buy a second one but it feels stupid paying like a hundred dollars more then I did a month ago haha.

Also no one seems to have 470's anymore?

I'm looking to upgrade in a few weeks and every review of the GTX1050Ti just has people telling me to spend an extra $20 and get the RX470.

EDIT: And does Australia have the RX 560/570 yet?

I would assume you got the 4GB model at that price? The RX 580 will crossfire with the 480 just fine. They start at $290.

The RX 560 and 570 are out in full force. The RX 560 is significantly better than a stock RX 460... It's a fully unlocked chip.
