Except what we really want is for D3D to die. The idea of gaming locked into a single API that only runs on one particular vendor's operating system in this day and age is deplorable.

Well its actually gotten worse over the last few years. Apple hasn't adopted Vulkan - they have made Metal - similar concepts though. https://developer.apple.com/metal/

This is cool to see - nvidia throwing active support and development into Vulkan

Direct3D/OpenGL higher level HALs made sense in the 1990s where there were far more graphics card makers. Rendition, NEC PowerVR, S3, 3dfx etc etc.

Now that there's only really 3, and they all use the same programmable shader approach, it makes sense to make the HAL lower level.

Apple have totally lost their way. They used to get what the advantage to open architecture was. Now they're just shooting themselves in the foot.

Apple's only ever cared about their graphics stack insofar enough to support their postscript display server and content creation. OpenGL has always been pretty slow in lieu of accuracy, and Metal is only there to unify a graphics API to iOS that isn't gles. Apple has never ever paid attention to anything that isn't Apple.

Except for the minor fact that iOS is BSD, and therefore directly benefits from open architecture...
