Or any tier one vendor's tower servers with 24x7x4hr warranty and LTO tape backup, also running SBS.

This.

Domains are still FTW as far as im concerned, so running dcpromo on a vanilla 2008R2 server is still one on my lists.

In a situation with crappy internet, i would have to provide a classic exchange setup, more $$ but what are you going to do when you are on a RIM.

oh god...

also, 1 stick of ram????
I see they are using faxing.. by an internal fax modem, IDEAL for directly transferring surges straight into their "critical" server!

But it was build by the owner's nephew, and he's a genius at IT stuff. I mean, the kid built his own gaming rig from parts! You don't find those IT skills anywhere, you know.

The company I worked for a few years ago insisted we buy all our it equipment from 1 specific computer store, If we wanted a server that's about what it looked like...1 year warranty with the most gypsy cheap components.

Warranty jobs were always a huge amount of fun....

If you want redundancy, just buy two of everything!

Nice gaming rig man!

We see this a lot also. We've had clients go to computer shops for servers and they get quotes for glorified desktops with 7200rpm SATA hard disks and 8GB RAM to run SBS 2011 for 20+ users.

I have never been able to work out why people don't want to spend money on some of their most critical business infrastructure, especially when it comes to backups!.
