you can also disable the themes service or run VGA mode from the F8 menu.

disabling the service - now that's the real classic mode

Given Safe made still had issues I doubt this will help, but I gues if nothing works worth a try, my money is on corrupt theme.

Brian
corrupt theme would not effect safe mode.

Has the OP checked his PCI-e mode is not set too low?

Also do you have another PCI-e slot to install your video card in?

I normally have it set to the basic theme. I just tried it then with the australia theme and some other crap theme they decided everyone needs. Also tried it at 1024x768. To no avail.

And to think that i was starting to think it was normal behaviour.

Woops didnt refresh before i posted. Hang on brb.

I did try a couple of the other themes, granted they were the basic themes. How would i fix a corupt theme?

PCI-e mode as in the bios setting? Its on auto. I do have a spare 8x slot, but considering it happens even with no gpu card, i can't see that being the problem. Not trying to argue with you.

ok, so it happens when the video card is removed?

could be hard drive related

do you have a spare drive you can install windows onto?

that would eliminate the drive and the OS installation.

If the other themes did the same thing then it's unlikely corrupt theme, I notice by your sig your overclocking, have you tried setting things back to default no overclock on CPU and RAM?

I was just thinking that. Not currently but i could have in a few days time. My firmware is up to date (just checked). AFAIK all power saving options for hdds are disabled. And yeah it happens with no gpu. No i haven't tried with no OC, and can't remember if it did it before i OCed. System is stable after testing with IBT and prime 95 for about 6 hours.

do you have a data drive as well as the Vertex?

If so it would be possible to partition it and install Windows onto that.

It's sounding more like the Vertex might be the issue.

Step 1
make a BACKUP!

step 2
windows key -> type in the search box "create partitions"

step 3
right click on your data drive and click shrink

step 4
right click on the new partition you created and click "set as active"

step 5
disconnect your ssd (physically)

I found the problem! Well not me, the troubleshooter in action center did. From what i can tell all it did was 100% enable ALL aero effects, now the problem is gone!
But every time i open internet explorer battlefield 3 server browser it tells me a program in not compatible then changes back to a basic theme. 'Disabale desktop composition' is NOT ticked in bf3 or origin properties.
How can i make it compatible?
Ok, so if you tick the box that says Disable scaling on high DPI settings' it fixes it! I don't get anymore stupid tails and my snappiness of the desktop has returned!
Thankyou to everyone that helped!
