Yeah it will be great in a few years when 2.5 or even 5g chipsets are standard in consumer gear, wont cost much more than 1g now.
Until then, 10g enterprise gear it is, ebay is very useful in keeping costs down for home setups.
I managed to pickup an intel X520 dual port card with two SPFs for $110 on ebay...

yeah, i ended up getting the TPLink (yuk, i know) 24 port with 4 x SFP+ for like $500 new.
Its fanless and actually has quite a few nice smart features.
The other option was a 28 port D-link for a little more but apparently its a little noisy.
