Default Indie Game: The Movie

Watched most of this yesterday, and thought it to be a real interesting look into the creation of the indie games which have really exploded in the past 4 years.

The film focuses on the makers of Braid, FEZ, and Super Meat Boy which have all been successful games.

The only gripe i had with the Doco is that i felt that the film ignored the other strong work that appeares on the PSN like Pixel Junk Shooter and Joe Danger.

Check it out if you get the chance.

Well of course it does. It isn't about Microsoft console indie developers, it was about two indie teams that would work with them, and that were interesting. Maybe nobody they found developing for PSN would talk with them, or make for an interesting documentary.

If you're going to say that, then you should also complain about how they didn't interview PC-specific indie devs, or iOS, or WiiWare, or whatever other platform.

The doco would have lacked depth and any connection with the developers if they were following any more.

Unless of couse the doco ran for 8+ hours. That said, this would have been a cool mini-series.

Interesting doco.

Such strange strange personalities.

Unfortunately, like an indie game, I wouldn't pay $10 for the movie (what makes it more insulting is that the Google result says $4.99 and then when you click through it's $10).

Highly recommend a watch if you know someone that's bought it.

Well, I found the movie to be rather depressing. I thought that it would be a good motivational tool, but it was quite the opposite. They all seemed quite depressed and — in the case of the Fez developer — suicidal. I wonder if things have improved now that they've made significant profits? I was going to try Super Meat Boy, but — even though it has received many positive reviews — I can't justify the $7.50 (which is 50% off) when so many AAA titles are on sale for similar prices.

Super Meat Boy has been a huge success.

Fez, not so much. Despite the fact that it's an absolutely brilliant, utterly charming game, it didn't sell too well.
