Default USB mouse intermittent

I recently bought a new wireless USB mouse which has a strange issue that I can't seem to fix. Sometimes the mouse works flawlessly, other times the mouse won't work after start up unless I plug in a separate mouse so I can re-install the USB Input Device Driver. In the Device Manager there is a yellow exclamation mark and if I click on properties it tells me it's a code 10 (The device cannot start).

If I unplug and re-plug the USB dongle I get a 50-50 success rate which doesn't seem to depend on the USB port (or anything else for that matter). Once the mouse works, it works completely fine until until the pc is turned off or restarted.

Any tips on how to get this mouse running consistently?

The mouse was an ebay cheapie (similar to this one) so perhaps it's just a crap product?? But i'm keen to try a fix before throwing it out.

Considering that it's a wireless mouse, make sure anything else that's on the same frequency is turned on to a different channel to make sure they don't interfere. Common causes are your cordless phone and router.

Also check your battery and maybe try re-installing motherboard drivers.

The issue would be with your USB controller/Motherboard/Southbridge or the wireless receiver. Either part of your Mobo is kicking it (usually you'll see all your USB2.0 and/or 3.0 devices have failed to start, not just one). Try another wireless mouse and different ports. If the other mouse works in the same port and your mouse is failing in all ports then it's definately the mouse's receiver.

Is there any kind of power management setting in the properties for this receiver in Device Manager?

I had this problem, with the mouse only refusing to start sometimes, you may recall me making a thread here earlier. Everyone suggested update bios, mobo drivers, USB mouse drivers etc....

I ended up reinstalling windows (xp) and its worked flawlessly ever since!

Thanks for the help, here's some additional details -

If i plug in another usb mouse (corded) I only get the code 10 on the wireless mouse.

If I try the wireless mouse in my other pcs I get no issues at all.

Unfortunately I think this is some strange driver clash which is unique to this motherboard and mouse combo. The only way I can fix it is to reinstall windows, which i can't be bothered to do, I'll just get another mouse. I also have some strange sound issues on this motherboard so perhaps the board is on it's last legs.

To add to my luck I can't seem to system restore this computer to a date beyond about 2 days and i started having these issues further back than that.

Thanks for the help guys.

Go buy a cheap logitech from office works or a supermarket, not sure why you'd bother wasting your time on an ebay cheapie?

Sorry, I know thats probably not the reply you'd want from me, but I'm just trying to be honest.

I think some portion of windows has just got it's knickers in a knot and it probably wouldn't be overly easy to fix. Not that you want to but better off with a nice fresh install, or what I do is load back a fresh OS + apps using Acronis
