Theyre not too bad with some EQ, they are just lacking given the lower tier quality/price. I have Solo 7C's in the lounge and they are so magical, Id love some 6C's for the desktop to keep the sound and shrink the size.

I ditched the microlab amp and use a couple of Marantz's for PC and hifi so that Im not relying on those dodgy shitty Microlab amps.
What's your budget like?

Budget is kinda low atm, maybe $200 just for passive speakers? Im just looking for some good deals that beat the Microlab Pro3. I got the SOlo 7C's for $200 a while ago so I expect there will be some variety if theyre available.
Doesnt have to be new at all, second hand speakers are worn in and well loved!

I might even get a cheap sub, because thats the only issue with the Pro3, is that they entirely lack bass from 100hz down, but some EQ can make decent sounds for the rest.

You can definitely try gumtree, there's a few vintage bookshelves on sale in the Brisbane area at the moment. Go ask some speaker guys on stereo.net.au and such for more specific advice as I'm actually quite new to the speaker scene.

On the headphone scene, I'm more experienced in.

The only worthy sale I saw in the Brisbane region for any bookshelf speakers was a set of Klipsch B20's with a centre (no sub? package usually includes that) for about $160. Seems reasonable, but theyre tiny little 5.25" cones and a horned tweeter. I cant be sure theyre even better than my Solo 7C's, which makes me think these are only good for completing a 5.1 surround instead of a decent 2.1

I am still on a quest to find replacements to my Microlab setups, both the desktop near-field and possibly the lounge hifi.

Theres lots of good upgrades for the lounge but I dont mind keeping the Solo 7C's that are already there, because theyre already really good (value for money as well).

Can anyone verify the quality and value of a Steinman AudioLab THR2 or SMS2 speaker set? Theyre very cheap and they 'look okay', since I cant judge for myself yet. There are two listings for each the THR2 and SMS2 both with a subwoofer that has fully adjustable phase and crossover, which is what drew my attention.

Steinman AudioLab? Looking at the ebay specials etc, they look like white van specials?

Yeah I really cant be sure honestly. Ive seen a couple cheap pieces, and also a pair of towers for 220 recently, and its hard to find any online docs about them. Maybe the guy with towers for 220 got ripped off and is still selling high.

I really want the sub out of these cheap sets because I dont care if its not the best, I just need a working crossover and phase control. I just have no idea if its worth keeping the speakers, and I doubt Ill be able to pass them along easily

Why don't you get a gumtree sub??? Plenty of brand names going for affordable prices

Also greys sell a fair bit of Yamaha... they have a few subs up there now?

I am looking for gumtree subs, the problem is that most of them are tied up with other speakers.

I just found an 8" Magnat woofer for 80 bucks but its rear ported and Im not sure of its quality either. I think I might just have to accept that decent subs will probably come up over the $150 mark, since thats the best Ive found that isnt a clapped out 1990's spec speaker/sub.

Speakers are really hit and miss, Im doing research on everything I find. Ive got 10 tabs open for Gumtree Audio stuff Im looking into at any given time.

Just came across a pair of Yamaha NS-333's which have a $600 RRP on various websites but are at least 13 years old now. These would be perfect for my near-field desk setup. Theyre $100 on Gumtree which seems like a steal, but its hard to know if theyre ok after so many years.

Such are the trials of acquiring quality audio on a strict budget.

Swan M50w are great 2.1's for PC.

Few downsides;

1. No headphone port
2. Stupid volume controller
