My main platform is a X200t with a 1.86GHz mobile c2d, 8Gb ram and 300Gb SSD, still does everything I ask it to. Honestly word/excel/youtube/web surfing are completely fine.
My grunt platform is X79 with octocore xeon and 64Gb ram. It never gets turned on though, instead I use my ITX i5-3330S rig, literally because it sits on top of my desk and I can reach its buttons and ports faster than bending down to the full tower case.

I generally upgrade because something is starting to fail. I got sick of that last time (2014) and bought a old-but-unused server board and a pair of Xeon L5640s (same core as the i7 970, but much lower clock speed and power). I'm expecting this one to give quite a few more years of solid use.

that mobo in your sig.. do you actually have that?
because if so, I'm pretty much needing that exact model - would I be able to to tempt you with a side-grade? Trade for another dual s1366 mobo? PM me if interested!

Like... 2 years now I think.

My aim was to get at least 3 out of it, Ryzen may have changed that plan but it's still ticking along nicely for my needs (present day anyway)

My main rig was purchased on 23/08/11, Clevo P150HM with an i7 2720QM.

I've built a few machines since then but I keep coming back to that laptop as my main. Still lanning with it actually as well.

It's seen a few upgrades though, from 8GB to 20GB, 256GB SSD to 1TB SSD, new GPU, LCD, and have a 2960XM I can put in as soon as I can power it.

my old rig, built April 2010

i7 980X / x58a-UD7 / 12GB dom gt 2000mhz / 2 x HD5970 quad xfire

was like $7-8k back then haha.

My brother still using it now with GTX970 SLI (HD5970's died a while ago)

in terms of performance at 1080p, barely any difference between his 980x and my 7700K (GTX970 SLI vs GTX1080)

X58 still a very solid gaming platform.

Core 2 Duo E6750 2.66 Ghz, O/C to 3.15. Pretty hardcore machine in 2008! 4Gb RAM, upgraded to a GTX-460 I won from OCAU for Folding and someone gave me an SSD. Being a student for 9 years sucks.

I have always scoffed a bit at the importance people put on CPUs, mine works perfectly well for everyday tasks and runs most of my games well enough to play them. Having said that, the CPU has certainly become the bottleneck in my system. GTA5 does not run smooth and some of my city building games like Cities Skylines start to bog down when the city gets really large.

Someday I'll grab a cheap i5 system off Gumtree or something and it will feel like I've just stepped into an Aston Martin

From 2012, I think the days of needing wholesale changes in PC are long gone, unless your into PC gadgets or work actually does require it.

My 3770k is clocked @4.5ghz but I had it running for few years at 5ghz when I first bought it, so it have plenty of grunt.

Upgraded GTX760 to GTX970 first it came out.

Now dont think I will upgrade anything unless something dies other buy few 2tb SSD and retire the LSI card when it becomes less than $400

Almost 5 years, ordered Oct 2012. (rig in sig) Obviously the video card is the odd one out. The sound card is even older.

It has been a pretty trusty rig, still going strong. I'll probably have a good look at 2nd gen Ryzen when that is released and the competing Intel CPUs at that time. I'm glad to see some competition finally.

Really the only feature that I would love to have is PCIE M.2 SSDs but that can wait.

Still running a 4930K with 32G Ram and a 780Ti from the end of 2013.

I have contemplated getting a 1080Ti but I have yet to see the need as I am only running a 1080p monitor.

I'm still running several 2500k setups with 8GB or 16GB and various GPU's up to 1070's. This includes my main PC since I gave my beast to my brother and I haven't decided what to upgrade to yet.

I've got almost a dozen C2Q and C2D systems still in use for less demanding duties, which with 8GB, a FSB OC and tight MCH timings plus a SSD still perform well in many situations.

Same here, circa 2011 I think?

2500k, Z77 chipset mobo which is slightly newer.

Also have a Intel system of 2004 vintage that's still running great for my classic games from the same period.

Daily driver is an i5 750 purchased July 2010. It would probably be intolerable by now, but it's held a stable 50% overclock for almost 7 years!

(It's had 2 RAM upgrades, 3 SSD upgrades, and I think it's on its 4th graphics card)

Definitely a bottleneck, but it's fine for pretty much anything. Just starting to struggle with games in the last year or two.

Every now and then I think about upgrading, but there's always something else I could spend money on instead.
