The only thing it's going to accomplish is shortening the life of the drive. Win 7 purposely disables defrag if it detects an SSD: http://apcmag.com/windows_7_gets_ssdfriendly.htm Quote:

OP disable full screen logo shadow from your Advanced bios features.
also in the same page, Make sure the HDD delay is set to 0 Here is a bios simulation for the EX58-Extreme. you need to tell us what speed your ram is, weather its XMP and weather you've selected the correct XMP for its rated speed. Now before you get back to me about that, if your not using the White sata sockets on your mobo, then under Integrated Peripherals go down to the Onboard Sata/Ide device and set it to Disabled. If you are using it, i suggest you don't either way, stick to blue sockets which run on the (intel) south-bridge and not on a separate jmicron controller. also, in Integrated peripherals, if you have left everything else all default then it should be optimized, otherwise if you've turned on boot from lan or anything like that turn it back off. With those settings and the correct XMP selected, it should post very fast, my 920 EX58-UD5 posts in roughly 3 seconds. |

You also mentioned that AVG was a "mistake" and that it hogs system resources, which is certainly not what I've experienced. |

Would doing a hardware upgrade speed up the process like swapping to say an asus board that has quick boot option or upgrading to better qaulity ram. At the moment i have OCZ DDR3 PC3-10666 / 1333MHz / Intel Core i7 Edition thinking of swapping to these for abit of a boost G.Skill Trident What are peoplees thoughts also people with i7 920s how long does your pc take from time you press button to ready to go loaded.

No. you dont need new hardware.
setup the XMP to run the ram at its rated speed for one. SMART wont slow down the POST time. just setup your system properly and it wont take 20 seconds for it to start booting Windows. |

its better to have it on.
it will tell you if theres ever a serious fault with your disk, and it doesnt startup time. I setup an XMP system yet, so I cant say which number you have to set. If you try both and see which one runs at 1333 (assuming your ram is 1333) then thats the one to choose, its harmless to select one then the other in the bios to find out since the actual setting isnt applied until you save and exit, so figure that one out yourself, its plain and simple. |

It looks ok, Just make sure that the dram voltage is not running above 1.65volts.
To check, you can go into your bios and under pc health you'll see what the dram voltage is set to, if its running above 1.65 volts set it manually to 1.64 volts asap. |

to start with I always use a very back to basics approach, cleaning the temp files, uninstalling bloated spyware and anti virus, defragging registry and compressing it, disabling prefetch and deleting all prefetch, then I remember a tool available thru microsoft, its called bootvis, you can basically set the system to restart thru bootvis and bootvis will log everything that happens on your computer from the time it starts shutting down to the point it pops out a time line log chart on your desktop upon restart which will give you quite a good idea as to where actually more time is consumed while booting.
To uninstall softwares, I use a combination of a freeware called revo uninstaller and cc cleaner To remove redundant drivers I use another freeware called driver sweeper Another thing I frequently use to tweak performance is a freeware called Cacheman Now keep in mind that all this is software experiments and suggestions is of XP era I'm yet to try Win 7 |
