Default Help , Why is my core i7 idleing at 40 C

HI ,
This is my setup.

Antec 900 version 2

Evga SLI Le Motherboard.

Sapphire HD 5850

OCZ 12800 1600 mhz 7-7-7-24 (3 x 2 GB)

Core i7 920

Corsair HX 750w

Prolimatech Megahalms Cpu cooler

Arctic Silver 5 thermal paste

I put 2 rice grain sized Thermal paste blots about 1 cm apart from each other on my cpu. I installed my cooler and put 2 fans on it.

I am suppose to be idling at 32 C with this cooler. I m idling at 40 C with the side pannel open.

I live in the outback. I usually have 33 - 38 C outside temps. COuld this have anything to do with my high temps.

I only installed it today. Does it take a while for the thermal paste to spread for better results?

This was my first build.

I would say that temperature is normal, i7's aren't as cool as Core 2 processors idling, so I would say that is a perferctly normal temperature (and probably good come to think of it, if you live in the outback)

PS: You can never idle at 32 degrees with that cooler, because your ambient is higher than this. Remember that fans don't actually cool air, they just transport it from one place to another

I need to give my stock HSF a clean but at 15% im at 50degrees, they do run hot, also note i7 9XX uses 120watts where as i7-8xx and i5 use something like 70 watts I think, more watts= more power running through the chip = more heat.

See my review and temps I was getting http://forums.overclockers.com.au/sh...d.php?t=821984
Depending on speedfan or coretemp 21-30C idle with 23C ambient room temp

Yes your high ambient temp is the reason your CPU temp is a little higher

AS5 has a 200hr curing time in which your temps may get slightly better

I measured my temperatures at night which is about 18 C and I was idleing at this temp. Here is a pic. and it says about 23 - 24 C. But when I open EVGA - Eleet tool it tells a another story. . What is going on ??? When i measured my temps before I was using E-Leet. Then I saw what you guys were using so I used Speed Fan instead. What is going on???

Don't use speedfan, use coretemp or realtemp

It isn't good or bad, average/ normal for an i7.

I get the same idle temps from my i7 920, under a custom water cooling setup in an air conditioned room with an ambient of 17 deg c, running at 4.2 ghz.

At these clocks it was 75 deg c with a stock cooler at idle.

Idle temps are not what you worry about, be more concerned with load temps

Mine was idling about 44 yesterday... outside temp makes quite an impact.
IVe been going higher because my exhaust fan selfdestructed.
Download realtemp or coretemp, I used to use speedfan and like the name indicates, it best used to control/monitor fan speed.

I think that I am going to Re-apply thermal paste. How do you guys apply your thermal paste. I put 2 rice sized drops of Thermal paste 1cm apart on the cpu. Is that correct , or are there better ways of putting it on?. I will clean it with Isoporyl Alchohol.

Ohh crap, didnt notice you had a prolimatech, yeah reapply the paste and check if its mounted correctly, you should be a sh*t load cooler. Again, maybe use cpuz, coretemp or realtemp to check your temperatures.
Good luck.

These are my temps after running Prime 95 for 1 hour.
This is before I re-apply the thermal paste. I am going to put a BB size blob of thermal paste on the cpu , then i will spread it with my finger inside a platic glove.

Consider yourself lucky lol

When it gets 38c here my air con gives out and I'm stuck in a 33c room with a 60c idle Q9550 -_-

With the standard HSF my true idle temp is 42degrees. I just looked at it when I rebooted this morning before starting up all my programs. It would be about 38 or lower if I cleaned the dust out of the HSF, but I need to go buy a bottle of compressed air.
