While you have the parts out, try doing a bench test. Load in the cpu, one stick of ram, and connect the power supply up to the 2x8pin and the 24/20 pin atx connector. Ensure a speaker is connected to the speaker header on the motherboard (part of the front panel connector). The beeps can give you an idea of whats going on. Connect a keyboard as well.

Start it up if you can, and if it starts, but then dies, try again by holding down insert on the keyboard. This tends to load bios safe defaults, giving you a chance to enter correct parameters into the bios.

To test a power supply alone, connect the green and black wires on the 20/24 pin conntector with a short length of wire. If the fan runs, the power supply *should* be ok.

Thanks guys. I'm of the thought that underpowering couldn't have fried it, too.

I did an out of case test but without the speaker

. Today I returned it. After a quick test they concluded that it was dead. Hopefully a replacement Monday and not RMA.

hehe know what its like - firing up that new puppy for the first time and nothing goes. I had a dodgy connector on my ATX 24 pin. Tried several supplies, and then took the mobo back for a replacement.

Pissed me off though - as for the first time in ages I was going to attend a lan. Couldnt go coz my PC wouldnt start :P (racing lan, not those silly gun games :P)

Do hope to hear - I got the motherboard swapped on the spot. Good luck

Glad to hear your success story.

It's definitely a frustrating situation. I got the motherboard replaced today. They were very good about it. I took it home and all up and running.

HOWEVER, when I install the Catalyst drivers (either the ones provided, or the latest from the website, or just with the driver/not CCC) I reboot, and after the Windows startup screen, it goes blank. I then found that switching the HDMI over to the onboard once it goes blank, I get visuals back. How odd!

I should add, first display device is set to PCI-E in BIOS (which is the closest option there is to disabling). I have since tried installing again after having uninstalled/disabled the onboard graphics via software/Windows. If I do this, still no result, and furthermore, no result when I switch to onboard.

There are many similar problems on other forums, but none that match this exactly. Any suggestions? I'm now so close.

Fingers crossed it has something to do with Lucid Virtu. A few people seem to complain about it. I'm thinking installing all the drivers + utilities on the Asrock disc provided was probably a mistake. I'll give uninstalling that a go tomorrow, and I'm willing to format.

What version BIOS are you using, most of the issues I have seen with display on ASROCK boards seem to be BIOS related, have you updated to latest, and have you tried resetting BIOS?

Hi mate,

I've now tried removing the Virtu software - this did nothing.

I then updated the BIOS to the latest version - this did nothing.

So, to recap, I can boot into Windows via the 7850 while it is a generic VGA adapter. Once the drivers are installed, I reboot, everything is fine until after the Windows startup/splash screen, at which point the visuals are gone.

If I then (without rebooting) switch the HDMI over to onboard, the visuals return.

If I try completely disabling the onboard, and then install the 7850 again, the same thing will happen, except now when the monitor goes blank, switching to onboard will keep the monitor blank.

The video card is connected to the PSU. I think I've been unlucky enough to score a dodgy motherboard and GPU. Wow.

Any suggestions, please don't hesitate

Hey guys,

Thought I'd let you know, the video card was replaced today and sure enough my computer now works perfectly. So, I was given both a faulty motherboard and video card, but at least it's all sorted now, and Umart dealt with it well.
