Again I come back to wanting to learn Blender. Being up bush means I cant meet up with people who can show me how to do certain things with blender - its easy to type but sometimes the explanation doesnt transcribe.
Anyway - I want to learn Blender to model with the end aim of learning how to do 3d animated modelling - would love to do so, really been something I want to learn. But I get put off by trying to start learning. Any other Blender heads out there?

Just started like two days ago. So far this is what I've made. Most of it is crap but I'm learning :P.
Motherfucking balloons. http://i.imgur.com/5AFsA.png Russian Standard. http://i.imgur.com/DGiXB.jpg A Barrel. http://i.imgur.com/X898g.png DAFUQ. http://i.imgur.com/RnsNJ.jpg Need to learn texturing, materials, how to set up the renderer correctly, then animation. Finally found something to use this processor for, but maybe it would of been smart to have gotten a 3770K. LOL. It is frustrating because as you said sometimes instructions are difficult to understand on the internet, but keep at it and you'll eventually get it. edit: Managed to crash it by creating basically an infinite loop of reflections. I lol'd.

What are you using as reference? I cant find a downloadable wiki or manual, with the interface constantly changing with the updated versions I despair a fair bit.

The UI is the worst. Never in my life have I encountered something that deviates so far from everything else ....maybe apart from Windows 8
![]() This is what I used though, for the brief time I spent with blender, but I may have already mentioned it elsewhere (I'm sure I did) http://cgcookie.com/blender/get-started-with-blender/ I couldn't believe how easy it all was (once you get used to the dodgy interface) it's a shame there's nothing I actually need to use it for, I could really get into it I used Lynda for a while too, but I didn't find them as helpful as the example above |

Do the first 3 of these (and the 4th if you like):
http://www.blender.org/education-hel...tting-started/ then this: http://cgcookie.com/blender/2009/06/...wooden-barrel/ Then this: http://www.blenderguru.com/videos/in...tion-to-cycles (forget about making it as good as he has done it, just watch to learn how to use Cycles. Use the Cycles renderer from now on). That is what I've done so far and I think I've gotten a pretty good grasp, especially considering it's been a few days since I started. There's also other good tutorials here: http://www.blender.org/education-hel...ials/modeling/ You won't be able to do it as fast as the people in the videos. Also while the GUI does change a bit between versions, for the most part it just looks different but with the same functionality. By that I mean if something is in the Object Data tab in 2.4, the same option will be there in 2.6 in the Object Data tab, it just appears to be different but its actually very similar. Just pause the video and have a look for it. Also some settings might only appear if you're in object mode instead of edit mode, and vice versa. Press tab to swap between those.

Also the manual is here:
http://wiki.blender.org/index.php/Doc:2.6/Manual You could probably download it if you wanted to. Not sure how, maybe with wget or something.

For 3D? Nothing, I just had a few hours free at work one day so I decided to give it a shot, though I'd have no problem using it/learning more if the opportunity arose
There's a tonne of tutorials on YT as well, it'd be good if you could find a series there: http://www.youtube.com/results?searc...ender+tutorial I only keep recommending video tuts because for the life of me, I can't learn from books |

A friend recommended this site to me the other day, as I'd like to get into game Dev (as a programmer) I'd still like some rudimentary 3d knowledge to either make my own small games on the side or just so I know what sort of things the 3d modellers need to do. I've not get become a "site sponsor" as I don't have the time to sit down and actually go through all the videos but it might be worth checking out.
3D Buzz My friends are doing the drawing 101 live class for something to do (even though they are already amazing) but site sponsors can view any of the past videos at any point. If you're lucky and they do another live class scenario you can do it on a weekly basis submit homework (if you want) get it marked and get a certificate of completion at the end if that helps with motivation. I signed up for a free account to view a few of the intro vids and they look OK but won't pay until I can sit down for a week or so and just get deep into it. Might be a good place to start because random tutes online can be hard to follow sometimes I find. |
