Even if you're obviously a non-Japanese person?

that's a shame. I know dogo onsen is the only one that allows tattoos...in the whole country.

There are some privately owned ones that will (you have to be in the know).

Wow I am surprised that Dōgo Onsen will allow that (one of the oldest Onsens in Japan and it is awesome) but this thread indicates it does:

I got told off very promptly by my father in law for paddling (breaststroke) across the bath (bad form he said).

This is the video I heard about it. At least the operators aren't being so coy about the subject.

Hi Peoples

I will be in Kyoto Dec 31. Plan is to visit Arashiyama early in the morning. Lunch at Kyoto station, Then buy New Year Dinner ( osechi if it can be had without pre-ordering) at Takashimaya/Daimaru/Isetan before heading to the airbnb (Fushimi-inari)

Will everything be open on the afternoon of Dec 31st? Especially the food halls at the department stores.

EDIT
Would this market be open between 1st-6th of January? http://flm.blog.jp/

tks
kogi

I haven't had issues with my tatts though it was partially cold and I was wearing hoodies for most of the time.

I can't speak for the market, but in my experience most places are open on NYE.

Xmas means very little in Japan (this is slowly changing as corporations try to drive change) but it is a normal day for them.

New Year (shogatsu or oshogatsu) is the most important holiday in Japan. Most businesses shut down from January 1 to January 3, and families typically gather to spend the days together.
It is great to head to some of the big temples if you can.

edit: on New Years Eve and watch/participate in pounding the big bell
