so far i'm preferring lower tier japanese.. but i'm still undecided and kinda flip-flopping,

Kind of. It's useful to dabble in others to get a feel for what it is like on the 'other side'. You learn more about the nuances of differences and can test out tricks that enemies do to you when you play your focus class, which overall makes you play better.

Torpedo spam is making me lose interest, don't get enough warning, the shitcan WW1 cruisers cannot dodge them fast enough and 2-3 hits cripples/sinks you, plus the destroyers can reload them and fire before you have time to work out where the last salvo came from.
Can't even f--king shoot them which is retarded.

Nothing at all to do with being an elitist. The naming conventions for ships have been like that for a few decades.

Only just found the thread

Been on since closed betta, and no I didn't buy my way in

I love the game so much so, that I have let WOT\WT prem lag and have not even loaded them up in months

Love my DD Jap flavour of course, those torps

Now to the noobs that get torp rage, it is your own fault pure and simple, the ONLY thing you have to do is change course and OR speed occasionally and it is extremely hard to torp you......

I know if I am up against some one with half a clue, they are very VERY hard to torp , plough along in a straight line in between islands though

First thing you should do if you see torp\bomb planes heading you way, is turn into them

really? what idiot came up with them, there's letters that don't even exist that many times, especially not in that sequence!

maybe it's just because i'm used to say... eve, where the short names for the ship classes actually make sense haha

Its the Navy hull classification naming convention.

I wish it explained why

like D is destroyer, but only WW1 and before...

and there's about 10 different ones for cruiser.

ED: what's everyones survival rate? mine's 9% haha

i get a good number of hits/kills though.

Upgrade your commander skills enough and you can get the +20 to torpedo aquisition range, once you got that you get tons of pre-warning of torpedoes coming your way/range. Sneaky DD's etc carn't cockroach you with torpedoes anymore while staying outta site as you get a warning near straight away if there in your ships detection range.

Think you have to be level 5 before you can assign Commander Skills then after each battle a certain amount of XP goes to your commander, get enough and you can assign skill points. Very similar to WOT crew skills.

Destroyers are easily smashed given their HP pool.
If you are in St.Louis:
  • Stay with the pack and use their eyes, your 10.4k gun range works better than 7-8k torps.
  • IF DDs are trolling you try using variations of One shot ranging fire, Salvo and Ripple, they can each serve a purpose...
  • Stay with the pack in higher tiers as you have 2 pissy MGs for AA.
  • Get some tips from r8response who seems to make it work nicely...
Better range and options come in the Phoenix and Omaha (but watch out for the 3rd hull upgrade as you lose artillery in exchange for becoming a Flakship.

so what are people's thoughts on HE Vs AP?

I'm finding it can be much more effective to use AP against cruisers and then everything else just spam the HE

This video is a bit long in the tooth but he does a good job of going through almost anything you need to know about AP v HE

There's also a video series about ensign training which is handy.

After watching one about hitting citadels, I have learned a bit more on how to make effective shots - before I was just spamming and hoping for a critical.

but, yeah -

Destroyers: don't bother with AP, your guns are too small HE all the way baby!
Cruisers: depending on gun size - save AP for other cruisers and destroyers (unless you have a large calibre - use them for Cruisers and Battleships instead)
Battleships: AP only for other Battleships and Cruisers. HE for everything else.
Carriers: what's a cannon? use harsh language!

Pro tip - use HE initially for carriers and set their deck on fire: aircraft can't land or take off while there are flames!
