How did it get on that perch, did you put it up there? What do its feet look like when it's on the ground?

Looks like a young baby bird.

Can't see in picture, but if upper beak comes over lower beak, it's generally a bird of prey (according to a birds of prey show I saw years ago)..

By that reasoning all cockatiels, lorikeets, and cockatoos are birds of prey

That looks like a type of quail to me. Straight beaks, land-dwelling stature.

Recharge, can you get another photo with some indication of size scale?

We don't have a garden so no risk there.
and there are creeks and small bush areas a block down the street.
looking at the info available, the chicks are self sufficient from he moment they hatch, there's no parental care at all.
mortality is high with only one in 200 chicks making it to adulthood.

GF wants to keep it til it can manage and then release (we have wild life licenses) but i dunno..

I know a few of the local old Indigenous mob. One of them told me his recipe for Scrub Turkey. First you get a good fire going and down to heaps of coals. You put your turkey, dressed and stuffed into the coals and a shale rock (local stone) on top. Cover in coals. Check in a week and when the rock is tender the Scrub Turkey needs a few more days!
