Looks pretty good to me. GPU upgrade possibly in your future? (although the 295x2 is still beast mode)

My rig

6700k with a Maelstrom 240 AIO cooler, I've finally fixed my heat issues with my CPU (without delid) so I should be able to wind some OC into it finally!

ROG Gene VIII mobo

Asus STRIX 1080 @ 2ghz

16gb DDR4 3000mhz (Vengeance LPX)

ThermalTake Core P3 open air case (this did wonders for GPU and CPU temps!)

Dell 27in 1440p display - gaming

Samsung 28in 4k display - youtube/other media

I'd sooner sell the 1080 and spend the difference to get a 1080Ti

A Ryzen system is in my future... but not yet, need to at least bump the 2 year old mark on the i7.

What was causing the heat issue?

If anything i'd only go up to a 1080 Ti, but honestly it's a schmick system

I'm thinking now that it was a clamp force problem, I had the problem with my noctua tower cooler, and even after switching to the water system, despite multiple remounts it was always a problem.

When I moved the rig into the open air chassis I really cranked that fucker down and used double the paste I normally would... and magically my temps dropped a good 15 degrees at 100% load.

I think the 115x socket adaptors from some of these manufacturers weren't accounting for the slightly lower height on the skylake heat spreader?

One thing I've learnt, just about every system can be improved upon in one way or another.

Core i5-4660
Radeon R9 280
4GB of Ram
2x AOC 24" 1MS 1920x1080 Monitors
Logitech G19
Fractal 4 Case

Worth doing a whole new build?

Hi, depends on your motherboard but I'd start with a new GPU for sure (RX 480/580 depending on your PSU). Sell the 280, they're the equivalent of the old HD 7950 (rebadged, essentially) and miners love 'em.

If your motherboard is a "Z" series I'd sell the current CPU and look for a "K" variant and overclock it.

DEFINITELY a RAM increase as well, at least 8GB and preferably 16GB.

100% totally depends on what you use the machine for.

The glaring fault is the ram, you need to at least double it.

Anything else will depend on your usage, and what features your motherboard doesn't have that you might like.

If its a facebook/web machine, media server or htpc, and be realistic about this.. most people 'think' they need a lot more grunt than their actual usage would suggest.. then I'd settle for adding another stick of ram and leave it at that.

If its a gamer, and the mobo ain't nothing special, then its probably time to look at at least a GPU as well, and if you are a FPS whore then you might as well go with a new machine altogether.

Thanks guys,

Will look at doing that. Been ages since I have followed whats new etc. Only concern if I get a new GPU, I won't bottleneck the CPU?
