Tribes 2 was terrible, even out of the box.

yes, if you have good memories of tribes 1. Do not play tribes 2.

Yeah when we were testing Tribes 2 there were quite a few complaints about the game literally being unplayable, with terrible framerates, crashes, glitches all sorts of crap and every single one went out with the full release.

Then they patched it and patched it and patched it and patched it and patched it to death, including big random gameplay changes so you never knew what the heck was going on.
Eventually it became playable, but most people had lost interest by then.

I still play Tribes1 now and then, but not 2. Let's also not speak of Vengeance.

One of my WoW guildmates is a developer at EA and occassionally torments me by telling me some details about WAR. Cruel, cruel man.

A lot of the time beta testing isn't fun. You're "playing" an incomplete, buggy, un-optomised, unbalanced game. There are times you can see through this and get on with the testing, but other times it can destroy the gaming experience for you. So don't feel too left out, the game that ships should be very different to the game that's being tested.

Unless it's Tribes 2, and the devs ignore every single beta ticket you submit so that the game in the box is virtually the same as the beta you tested, making it unplayable for most people
Not bitter, really.

having said all of that though, don't beat yourself up if you can't find any bugs. i've tested quite a few games so far and I have never experienced any serious bug that would require me to send in a bug report. sure, you get stuck running around and jumping, but EVERYONE is having that problem and the devs know about it. just hang in there. at the very least you'll all play in open beta.

Call me crazy but I actually enjoy finding bugs and trying to replicate them. It actually annoys the hell out of me when people get into a beta just to play the game, not help improve it. Especially when they bitch about how much the game sucks compared to WOW in chat.

Best beta I've been in was jumpgate, dev's were hands on all the time asking for help, asking for feedback and organising events to reward helpful testers.

I do agree that it can sometimes kill the gameplay experience when the game goes live but it can also improve it greatly.

What you are saying is true, but some of the time just getting it running and playing it through is help enough.

I've encounted a bit of that already. Trying to PvP against people who are using exploits AND numbers just to farm kills is a) not fun and b) makes it impossible to test certain aspects, other than death.

There were a few exploits in the SWG beta that a group of people tried to keep hush hush until release so they could take advantage of it.

I've run into morons taking advantage of exploits in just about every beta I've been in, some even claimed they were testing it. Guess they thought they'd replicate it thousands of times just to make sure before /bugging it.
